R2000 Filters
« on: December 23, 2022, 03:44:57 PM »

Hey All!
I just bought a used Kenwood R2000 and was wondering what filters fit this unit? I primarily listen and decode utilities on HF and was also wondering how many filters can I install in the radio? I know at least I can install a YG-455C filter for CW but can I substitute a filter in it's place?
Thanks in advance if you can answer my questions. Merry Christmas!!   Mystic

Can't really help. I picked up a R-5000 and seems like a really nice radio. I have a R-300 that is built like a tank and looks/feels like an old Hammarlund.

Ancient stuff.

-- but if you like to listen to radios old-fashioned style..well ?

I think these filters can be very picky. Not a real match and !!! Have to get the input from a 'filter guru'.(a vanishing breed)(as to quartz filters)

hmm..seems like I have been through this as to 455C-1  etc. The reason I am so elusive is I sit in one place and my radio inventory might be 5000 miles away at the time. (and a collector)

You might be in luck if in stock.

These things have various specifications which I do not recall now. Y know..so many hz  ?? etc.

If not an exact match no good. BUT the filter guru I know have figured out some substitutions.  --size to fit ??

BOTH on Ebay today ?

Yes. Can get expensive. I recent picked up another Yaesu FT 818 and gotta get narrow filters !!! CW the most important. (I think) The 818 going for some good prices now and can't be the worst radio. (although everything going SDR)

Kenwood's 455KHz filters were made by NDK.

There are a couple of variants - the YG-455C has a 455.0KHz center frequency, while the -C1's is 455.7KHz. Thus, they cannot be interchanged without retuning the BFO a bit.

JRC "CFL-" crystal filters, on the other hand (also made by NDK) will directly interchange with the 455.0KHz Kenwood units. In an act of unholy matrimony, several of my NRD-5x5 receivers have Kenwood CW filters installed - either 500 or 250Hz B/W. I also have a YG-455C in one of my JST-135 transceivers.

Inrad made 455KHz filters for the early Kenwoods and for JRC gear. I occasionally see these come up for sale used or on the auction site, and Inrad still carries a few models (albeit $pendy).

So you have options.
