Yaesu/ICOM SDR-based radios an PC panadapter
« on: November 14, 2022, 06:05:15 PM »

I see from this article: https://support.hamradiodeluxe.com/support/solutions/articles/51000290388-panadapter-display-waterfall-and-bandscope

They say
Quote
Software can only produce a panadapter display if the transceiver can produce data via its CAT commands or via IQ data. This is a very short list of radios made in the last 5 years or so - iCOM IC-705, IC-7300, IC-7850/51, IC-7610, IC-9700, Kenwood TS-890S, and any Flex Radio. As of the time this is being written (20 Feb 2022), no other radios have the ability to generate the required data to create a panadapter display.

What facilities do the 7300/890S make available for PC software to get a panadapter display?  What software is capable of rendering it?

I can't speak for the 890, but the 7300 does make the processed panadaptor data available in the CAT stream over the USB port. I say "processed panadaptor data" because this is not a proper IQ stream that can be fed into an SDR receiver program like SDR Console - it is a representation of the data driving the visual display on the radio's internal screen. The data rate is not stunningly good, nor is the resolution, but it can be displayed on a PC screen provided you don't try to zoom in too far on it.

Win4ICOM can display it - if you have a 7300 available, you can download an evaluation copy on a one month free licence. There is at least one other program, but the name currently escapes me. When I had a 7300, I did try it for a while, but it was rather disappointing and I ended up buying an RSP1A which I used with SDR Console interfaced to Win4ICOM to provide synchronization of tuning and mode...

I own a TS-890S and, while I don't routinely use too much bling in the shack owing to RFI considerations in LF/MF operations, I have tried a few remote display options just for fun.  The bandscope and front panel is nicely rendered by the free Kenwood ARCP-890 software application but you have to use the transceiver LAN interface for good results; with that interface the remote display has effectively no latency in updates.

There is a fair bit of discussion in the TS-890S user group on software interfaces and, while the commentary can be a bit variable, it's worth a search to see the range of software suites and applications that people are using.  You might also want to take a look at Tony Collen's (AE0KW) open890 project (https://github.com/tonyc/open890 or https://www.reddit.com/r/hamdevs/comments/wcot0y/open890_a_webbased_remote_control_ui_for_the/ , or a number of other sites).  It's a web browser based remote user interface for the TS-890S and is getting good reviews.  I notice from the forums that Tony is responsive to user suggestions for inclusions, improvements and bug fixes.
