Most hams do not know how to adjust for maximum signal-to-noise ratio.
But... what noises are you having?  Can you discribe better, please?

I have a couple modern icoms. I like them very much.

But just listening is hard to beat my kenwood hybrids.

It seems like playing with the af and rf gain I can get rid of noise and keep the speech on the kenwoods.

When I try that on the icoms it just squelches out everything

Of course the kenwoods don’t have the dsp, notching, filters. But more often than not I don’t have to use those features.

I just bought  a Yaesu FTDX 10 because all my research indicates that Yaesu have the best noise reduction.
