Use Heil PR-40 dynamic mike with ICOM IC-705?
« on: November 17, 2022, 07:32:45 AM »

I'd like to use this mic with my Icom IC-705. I could not find any commercially made harnesses so I called a guy who has made custom mic harnesses for me before. His question is will this dynamic mic work with this radio? Thanks in advance.

The HM-243 speaker/mic that comes with the radio has an electret condenser mic element, which is what the radio is designed for. You still can use a dynamic mic with it by turning off the phantom voltage (required for an electret element) in the menu. But most likely you'll have to turn the mic gain control to a very high level, which would not be necessary with an electret mic.

Interesting, thanks. The PR-40 is boom mounted so it can be close to my mouth. I do have the EQ plus and 8 band equalizer by W2IHY. I'll chat with him about maybe integrating that to see if it will give the mic some boost.

Using the W2IHY units will probably do the trick for you, boosting the mic's output.

You could also ask the folks at Heil about recommended parts, cables, and adapters to accomplish your goal. They would know the PR-40 capabilities better than others.

Your PR40 is a 600 ohm balanced dynamic mic.  The IC705 takes a higher impedance electret mic.
So you will have to arrange for conversion of levels and impedance.  Don't forget the supervision... switching from transmit to receive needs to be addressed.

:)I used the Heil PR781 on my IC7700.
Never worked well, VOX refused to work. Levels are too low.
Dynamics are prone to Humm.

Currently Im running a computer gaming mic that is noise cancelling and very sensistive , but RF immune.
Little chinese mic on mini tripod and foot switch.
Audio is brilliant.

:)I used one of these.. and a foot switch.

Cut 3.5mm plug off, white center to mic. input and phantom supply, braid to mic. braid.
Foot switch to PTT+ and PTT earth return, NOT MIC BRAID. Must be separate.
