LMR-240 - Removing foil
« on: November 17, 2022, 02:29:42 PM »

I am using LMR-240 for jumper cables.  I use the DX Engineering crimper and prep tools.  It is difficult for me to remove the foil shields.  I use an exacto knife, but cannot peel it back like the pictures.  Any hints for removing the foil?

Leave the foil on, just fold the braid back. Some foil on coax is bonded. You will not get it off.

You don't, not designed to do that. That is why LMR cables require specific connectors.

I've never used the 'correct' LMR style connector.  I also never used anything other than regular whatever I could find at the surplus houses connectors on 9913 (also foil and braid).

What I've ALWAYS done is strip back an extra 1/16th of an inch of foil covered insulation.  Done.

I just built a bunch of cable assemblies using BNC and LMR240 doing the same thing.  This was to GPSDO my entire test bench.

Having the correct stripper for the job is more important than the companies 'approved' connector.

Then again, I made up connectors for 75 ohm hardline back in the day, too.  For PL259.  And they didn't make any from the manufacturer.

Since the shield-to-center wire spacing determines impedance I do not remove it.  I just don't push the wire too far into the connector and short it out. Note aluminum doesn't solder and the foam can melt, so only use the braid for any soldering.  That's why crimp connectors are recommended for that cable.

But then, so are we all, in this context.

People like you have to use the correct connector.  Because you are too ignorant to figure out how to do it otherwise.

Why not add something constructive rather than be a trolling piece of sh17?

You sir are a broken record. Based on your answers, you should only listen. Therefore, I am typing very slowly so you can understand.

If you go expense of buying a high-performance coax, then use a CB grade PL-259, you are a sammy hammy CB operator who dunnochit.

WOW THATS ALL JUST WOW

I am crimping LMR240 equivalents using generic connectors. No tape removal except when  obvious. For many cables zero failures at the legal limit. I had many failures with soldered connectors.

Apparently the insulator inside the connector does not allow any contact with the tape.
