Probably explained in the user’s manual available online if you don’t have the hard copy.

Methods to narrow or shift the passband on receivers has existed in different forms since the 1950s

Yes, narrow filters and DSP help a lot, but you need to know how to use it!  And if you narrow below 400 Hz you lose the ability to do RTTY.  Plan accordingly.

On the FT897/857/100 the APF filter can really help on CW as well.  It will narrow the passband to a 120hz or 240hz slice and will boost the CW signal that you center it on.  Will help pull signals out of the noise as well.  One of the best features on those radios.

Modern radios will allow you to set your passband according to the mode you intend to operate.  For instance the lowly IC 7300 will have 3 passband settings by default for each of the modes: CW, SSB, RTTY, FM, and AM.  Not to mention the "on the fly passband settings of the "Twin Passband Tuning" knobs. Which can be adjusted instantly either together or separately instantly. The days of the crystal or mechanical filter are OVER. These settings (3 for each mode) will be retained in memory of the rig. Even the Twin Passband tuning knobs location will stay in memory unless cleared.  As the knobs have no connection to anything they are just input to the cpu. And the cpu remembers.

Bandwidth control (down to 50 Hz), IF shift and APF are wonderful tools to pull those weak signals out of the noise. I don't have to use IF shift often but the APF and bandwidth controls get used constantly here way out in the middle of the ocean. The present radio is an FTdx-10 which I bought after realizing the IC-7300 receiver wasn't up to the job of weak signal CW.
