ICOM IC-735 Display Contrast Question—Adjustable?
« on: November 18, 2022, 10:28:03 AM »

Hello. I recently had an ICOM IC-735 that displayed “grey” digits instead of black. Is there a method of increasing the contrast, or the ability to adjust the contrast to make the digits on the LCD more readable?

Thank you!

I just downloaded the manual and saw no way to adjust.  I have had several and thought there was a trim pot, but on quick review can't see one.  I did see a large number of links when I did a search about display issues.   They all seemed to be the same problem.  Try and call Icom's service ( may not be easy to get someone ) or try an email.  Do a search for Icom service centers.  There are several around the country and they all seem to be good.  You may get a quicker response from one of them.  It may be a problem on a board supplying a voltage to the LCD unit, or the LCD display may be going.  Ask the service center guys if they have a basket case 735 with a good display.  At the value today of a 735 I don't know if it would be worth fixing, unless you got it super cheap, to have owned it for years.  They really are a great little rig.  Great for portable if you use a small low power antenna tuner.  Only lack of, is you have no easy access for computer control.  Best of luck, hope it is a simple issue.  k4wh

Thanks, K4WH, for your suggestions.  I looked up how an LCD actually operates, and am wondering if perhaps the voltage to it might be a bit low.  From reading, it seems like the voltage is what causes the liquid crystals to polarize and block light.  So, maybe my voltage to the display is sagging, rather than the display itself failing.  Next time I get access to that radio that is something I will check.   Thank you.

If you should need a board/display unit, there are three listed on ebay right now. One is reasonable, the other two are a bit high, but they're there.
