QRP power calcs
« on: November 19, 2022, 06:13:26 AM »

Guys, did I calculate this with appropriate accuracy?

I walk 2.5 mph. I weigh 200 lb. Appears I am consuming 200 or so watts.

If I generate a one watt QRP signnal and reach someone say 200 miles away, the power used was roughly one two hundredth of my walking energy. Is that right???

If I am right, radio magic becomes even more amazing to me.

It's even better than that!  You consume about as much energy as a 200 Watt light bulb (incandescent)  Most of that is used to maintain your body temperature (85% by one source).  So maybe 15% or 30 Watts is used to walk.  So radio is VERY efficient.

Do it another way so the average ham has a better perspective: how many 16 inch pepperoni and cheese pizza's would you need to eat in an hour to equal the energy of a 5watt output qrp radio transmitting at a 10 percent duty cycle for 1 hour?
