Ic 2kl question
« on: November 20, 2022, 05:44:50 PM »

My older IC2KL when powered on, the protector light is lit and the amp fan is running but nothing feels or seems how.  How to reset the protection?  Other letting it sit for a long time?

:)As an IC-2KL owner, You would reset the protection by switching from operate to standby and back to operate.
If it does not reset , you more than likely have a loose internal connector or dry joint on the control pcb.
It seems the Over temperature switch or circuit has an issue, hence the fan running.
Could also be bad MOLEX connector from PSU to amp. (One of the supplies low or missing.)

Be aware that the IC-2KL does not have an internal chassis, the covers form part of the chassis so when you take the covers off, everything will be floating freely on the desk, so be careful not to damage cables and connectors and / Or components.

Does the protection light and fan start running the instant it is turned on or does it take some time?

The light is one when turned on the the fan faintly, can be heard running.  I am suspecting a shorted thermal switch.

The instruction manual explains how the thermal switches are supposed to work.  There are a pair for the power transformer and another pair attached to the heatsink.

Here is a photo of the thermal switches attached to the heatsink of the 2KL. There two of them. One is labelled 50M for 50 degrees C., the other is labelled 80M for 80 degrees C.

The 50 degree one will turn on the fan if shorted. If the 80 degree one shorts, it will turn on the "protection" LED.

In my 2KL, the 50 degree one failed open so it never would turn on the fan.

If you need one or both, they are available on eBay.

I did end up identififying the, not what I was expecting.  I am thinking I have a fail pass transistor in the PS and the fuse is reading 60 V instead of 42.

My 2KL came without the linear power supply so I never had to deal with it. The OEM supply is a linear which as you know is pretty large and heavy. I opted for a $76 switching supply that I bought off Aliexpress. Total with tax and shipping was $102.

I checked it for spurious on the output but found none.

The regulation is very good. The voltage from the power supply was measured at not transmitting load ( +40.09 VDC ) to full load at 22.5 A ( +40.02 VDC ).

If you blew the pass transistors in the power supply ( a pair of 2SD797's ), they are pretty cheap on eBay. A pair for about $12 shipped.

I don't think they had free shipping when I ordered.

I sprayed it black with Rustoleum,

P.S. All the details are on this thread.

???The 30 A fuse is before the pass transistors in the power supply, you will see the unregulated voltage there, Around 55 to 60v.
If you are testing in the  Amp, 60v of course would be wrong.
Where do you see this 60V?

:)Chassis mounted fuse?. In the Power supply?.
Test the PSU output by looping mains supply in the molex plug with wire link, 3 and 6 as I recall, and checking DC voltage in the molex plug.
Just make 100% sure to loop mains correctly!..
If you have 60v in linear lets hope no damage has been done.
