Issue with Icom 7300
« on: November 22, 2022, 05:16:46 PM »

I have a strange issue with my Icom 7300 in digital mode.

I'm using WSJT-x on Windows 7, with an XGGComms Digimode-4 interface cable. I'm using the built-in FT8 settings on my Icom 7300.

Everything appears to work Ok in FT8 mode for sending and receiving, but I noticed the following:

When WSJT goes to transmit, or I click on 'Tune', the 7300 switches to transmit immediately, but the power takes about 3-4 secs to come up to my power setting of 50 watts.

I previously used WSJT on the same computer, connected to my Icom 718 with no issues.

When I set the 7300 for CW mode, the transmit power comes up immediately.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

You don't need an interface for the 7300 radio.  Just need a USB cable to connect your rig to your computer.  Both CAT and audio are handled with that single cable.

There are no built in settings for FT-8 on an 7300..  Just searched the English manual.  ??

You don't mention what software you are using to control your rig, eg hamlibs, rigcontrol etc.

Fill us in.

As mentioned by Jaye, you don't need an interface with the IC-7300, it is all built in.

I don't use FT8, but do use VarAC, which is similar but is a real QSO chat mode. I set my 7300 to USB-D, or rather the VarAC program sets it. I don't use the so called FT8 mode on the 7300, it's not needed.

The IC-7300 runs 50 Watts on USB-D with no ALC showing (or very little) and produces RF instantly and at a stable power level. In fact the IC-7300 is one of the best data radios around and also runs Amtor and Pactor "out of the box" (external data modem needed for Pactor and Amtor) with minimal latency too.

You don't have a problem with the 7300.  You have a problem with your computer. The audio is not being released  from the computer. This latency is almost always caused by the computer not having enough clock cycles (too great of a CPU load) to produce the audio over the USB cable. As said by others use the USB port on the 7300 going straight to a USB port on the pc. I see this latency every so often, often a simple reboot of the PC will fix it, or "unload" some of the things you have running in the background on the PC. Also I can assure you that if you want to run 100 watts on the 7300, it will do it all day every day for years. I have been running 100 watts on FT8 since 2017 will absolutely no overheating or problems. You cannot overheat a 7300 on FT8.  I can't say that for many other rigs. It is up to you of course if you want to take my advice, I am just telling you what I (and many others) have done.
