FT1000mp REPAIR RESOURCE
« on: November 25, 2022, 08:58:20 AM »

Hi All,  I need to get my FT1000MP repaired.  There is no output on 40M.  Byron, WA4GEG, who used to fix 1000MP's instructed me on what neds to be done (the 40M relay trace is likely in need of resoldering), but he no longer services these radios.  I am unable to do the work myself due to some physical limitations (nerve damage in my hands prevents me from working on small electronic projects).  Does anyone know of a reliable resource who can fix this rig?  I love it and would love to see it workin gagain.  I would prefer someone within driving distance of southern NH (like 8-10 hours max) if possible as shipping will be a ton..  but I will if necessary.  I've searched but cannot find anyone who still fixes these. Thanks in advance for your help.

Perhaps a nearby Makerspace has an electronics soldering expert.
Robots competitions undoubtedly creates the need for soldering skill.  That may be another source of needed expertise to fix your radio.

Sorry to hear of your nerve damage.  As a stroke survivor I'd had issues as well.
Surprisingly enough, I've found that playing golf is quite tolerant of missed shots when you need to adjust to how things are day to day.
Even the best players make bad shots!

Shipping is not a "ton" for that radio , if you use www.pirateship.com (a UPS Counterpart) and is about 48.00 to 60.00 at 38 Pounds. I ship them all the time. www.N4ATS.com

I'll be using Midwest Technical Service when Tim returns from vacation in May LOL...  he is closed from late Dec to late April.  I'll post when I get the rig back to close out the thread.

Thanks!

This is curious. Wonder what the deal is with the standard MP. I know I have sent him at least three. Maybe people don't want to spend a bunch on a $750 rig. But, I would pay him whatever to fix one of mine and not give it a second thought. I respect his capabilities on this particular rig that much.

I assume you are referring to Byron... I didn't ask why as he was pretty clear he only works on Mark-V Field units now.  It is unfortunate as he is highly regarded by anyone that has ever had service performed by him.  However, Tim at MWS is also a highly regarded resource for these radios.  The only challenge there is that he takes a very long vacation at Christmas!

Yes. Maybe there are some NLA parts for the straight MP.  Don't know.
Or, it could be that they are so long in the tooth that working on them is chasing your tail.
But, if he doesn't want to work on them it's his business.
I still have one MP and if it dies I'll just throw it in the dumpster or give it to somebody for parts. The only reason I kept it so long is Byron.

I'll take it!
