Kenwood TS-711E
« on: September 29, 2022, 01:18:07 PM »

I have recently bought a TS-711E and would like to open the local repeaters with a 123Hz subtone. Anyone that can help me make it work?

According to the manual, the TS711a (USA) is for region 2 and requires an optional TU-5 board to supply CTCSS tones.  The TS711e (Europe) version does NOT accept this board, and can only do DCS tones. It does do tone burst.
Since it is an older rig, Good luck.

Yes Mike, I just found out as soon as I had bought the TU-5 board. Now I just have to find out if it is possible to rebuild the rig to accept it. Would like to know where the differences are between the TS-711a and the 711e. :)

Download the schematics for each and trace the differences.

You are eventually going to discover that the 2M frequency band edges are also different between EU (Rgn 1) and USA (Rgn 2).  The micro-p firmware is quite different and not user-modifiable.  Better to not waste your time trying to convert the 711E, just find a 711-K in the sale listings and get on the air.

Sadly I think you will find it is not worth the trouble. It might just end up as a good receiver for you.

I have the 70cm version, the 811. First congratulations for the radio. I think that for repeaters any Chinese FM radios may be more user friendly. However, for SSB/CW are still a great choice. For tones and  subtones I guess you need a subtone interface between the mic and the mic connector or https://www.piexx.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=14 . Regarding the differences between the American and the European I thought it was a matter of diodes to remove but I might be wrong. If you can't live with these FM quirks, I think you can sell it very well to SSB/CW entustiasts. Consider you can also use it as a driver for the excellent reasonably priced 23cm transverters by SGLAB.
