Can AM station hear you on lsb
« on: November 30, 2022, 12:44:13 PM »

dumb question - this am I was using my older kenwood ts-520s

While on 40m I was listening to a qso - loud, clear 59 plus.

Then I heard one say he was glad to hear someone on am

I turned on my icom and tuned them in on am - obviously the am carrier looks much different on the waterfall from a sideband station. I do occasionally have AM qso’s with people on 75m so I’m familiar with it.

Because I don’t have or waterfall or AM on the kenwood, and the signal was so clear I assumed they were on lsb.

I was wondering if I did contact one of the am stations would they simply hear the lower sideband and my voice tone would be just missing the upper sideband?

If you are transmitting LSB, your signal will be missing the upper sideband and the carrier. Without the carrier the AM receivers will not copy your LSB signal in a readable manner. However, if the AM station realized what was happening he could turn on his BFO (as if he were operating CW) and tune it to replace your missing carrier. Then he could copy your LSB signal on the AM receiver.

Another possibility is if the receiving station is running synchronous AM, then they could copy your sideband signal. It is essentially like turning on your BFO as Bob stated.      73, Jim

If the sideband stations are running ESSB then yes, it's usually possible to demodulated them in an am receiver.  This is because the low bass frequencies replace the carrier.

It's also possible if you ha e another receiver or piece of electronics equipment near that produce an rf carrier or spur near the IF of the receiver you're using.

Sure you can, hell I am sitting here listening to some guys on 3.885 AM with my rig on LSB. I can copy them with the radio tuned just below their transmitting frequency of 3.885. Adjust the VFO so you do not hear the AM carrier and you are good to go.
