Both of my amps use GU74b's and no problems whatsoever. Great tube... otherwise, ACOM would not be selling thousands of 2000A's and 1000's.
Last year replaced the GU74b in my ACOM 1000 after 20 years of service on the original tube. By which standard is this a sh1t tube? Plus, relatively cheap to replace, compared to some other valves. I am extremely happy with my ETO 91b and ACOM 1000. Very reliable, trouble-free amps.
When they DO fail, the GU74b shorts the screen to HV internally. This is almost always catastrophic for some of the screen supply parts. I have repaired hundreds of Alpha 91B and 99 amps with screen parts incinerated, the FET regulator blown apart or shorted and resistors blown open. Acom built all 900 of the 91B amps using metal film and/or carbon comp resistors in two places that get overloaded by the tube shorts, the resistors get red hot instead of opening. When the 91B amps started coming in with PC boards with big black holes burned thru, Alpha started changing those 2 parts to metal oxide flameproof resistors on all the new 91B amps shipped from Mead, Colorado.
Maybe Acom uses a different circuit now...
