706MKII G

so, I am not asking about a boat anchor, but rather, a near 20 year old icom, which I have on my desk, in an rv, mainly to listen.

all of a sudden, when swtiching bands, (those up and down buttons), 40 meters is showing up twice. once at the frequency I leave it at, and the other at 7.8 megahertz, a frequency I would never use and do not select. no matter what I do, it keep popping up as i scroll thru the bands.

perhaps I have done something that caused this....the rig mostly sits there and I love that it is still working after all these years, so I have newer units set aside, just because.

if this is a defect now manifesting itself, then it becomes a question about work repairing, as I do have a number of other units and this one isthe better part of 20 years old, perhaps, indeed, it is.

anyone have any thoughts, please

thanks in advance,

robert

Not sure buy what about trying a reset?  If you don't have a manual trying searching online for the details---should be easy to do once you know which buttons to push/hold...

provided that I have some settings I want to keep, I am certainly willing to do that and appreciate the suggestion.

I will stand by to see if there might be any other way or suggestion as to how it happened but in the end, if there is nothing else, I will do just that.

many thanks.

Is it stepping through all the bands PLUS having the 7.8 show up or is there a band missing where the 7.8 is?
IIRC the band register stays on the last frequency operated on, so an inadvertent bump of the tiny buttons may have been the cause.
If a band is missing, change the frequency of the 7.8 to what you want for the missing band and tune-up.

There is one band position that is flexible and can be set for any frequency range of interest. For example, you may use it for shortwave listening. Sounds like you were using it to listen to 40 meters in its last use. Probably nothing wrong with the radio.

As always, read the manual for details.

I also have that model of radio and have not used it in couple of years. So, my memory is not clear of how that feature works.

I have changed the frequency of that band a handful of times, but it always ends up back there again.

that said, while I have not transmitted with it lately, everything else seems to be fine, so my question, especially given the age of the unit and that I do have other radios, was as much curiosity as anything.

*that* said, the good suggestion about resetting the radio is probably going to end up being the best one...but to my friend, here, who suggested that there is that one band position that can be set up for "whatever", that sounds about right, given the "symptoms", so I will look into that before I do anything else.

thanks all for the great help and for the messages!

happy holiday to all, as well.

It is the "Extra" band all 706's have. To change it go to another band ie 10 meters and then spin the vfo down to 11 meters. Then start changing bands again. The "Extra" band will now be 11 meters instead of 7.8 mhz.
