Do NOT Drop your Yaesu FT70.
« on: December 12, 2022, 06:10:13 PM »

Don't misconstrue the message here.

I love my Yaesu FT70.  It's a cheap way to get on Yaesu fusion.

It is NOT drop resistant.

The speaker is mounted to the plastic front chassis.  It connects to the circuit board, not with a small pigtail and connector, but instead, there are two spring tabs on the board that make contact with pads on the speaker via a press fit.

If you drop the radio, those tabs will get bent toward the circuit board, breaking the circuit.  The radio will appear like it's operating normally, but no sound will emanate from the speaker.  Speaker mic will work.

Don't bother trying to get the radio fixed by Yaesu if its out of warranty.  You'll be paying $95 an hour for a service fee (plus parts), plus shipping.  It's cheaper to buy a new radio.

There is an awesome video on Youtube that shows how to open the radio and fix the tabs.  I followed the instructions and fixed my radio.

From now on, the radio will sit deep in a pocket, and I'll be using a speaker mic.

Be forewarned.

Try losing a 3 day old iPhone $1,300 Pro Max 14 off a sailboat last week. Down, down, down to the bottom she went. Depth indicator said 840+ feet...........I guess Poseidon needed a new phone to call Neptune.

I lost an HT overboard on a fishing trip. Fortunately, I was docked in about 10ft or so of water and salt water too. Dove in after it. Rather than blow off a day of fishing I filled up a bucket of fresh water and put the HT in it and went fishing. I had nothing to lose.  On the way home hit a pharmacy and picked up a few bottles of isopropyl alcohol. Emptied the bucket of water, took the HT apart, filled the bucket up with the alcohol and put the pieces of the HT in the bucket for an hour.  Removed the pieces/parts and let them dry in the hot sun.  Reassembled the HT.  Still have the old DJ-160T today and works like a charm.

Why don't you bend the tabs back out so they make contact again?
