This kinda scam been around since the 1990's ...... and will continue in different forms forever. Lately I'm getting email scams almost daily.
Yes, I get 1 or 2 spam email scams a day in my XYL's email account on yahoo.com. The problem is that, my XYL passed away over a year ago. I only keep the account in case an old friend tries to contact her. Sometimes these spam emails are redirects from a old ".msn" account that we deleted over 10 years ago.
Usually the spam says something like "Order successfully placed" or "Your order is confirmed". And they are telling me that my account is being hit for $300-$500 for things like "Norton LifeLock Antivirus" or "Software Support" from Geeksquad. Sometimes they say they are charging my bank account and sometime my PayPal account. Of course, there are no accounts to charge.
Each spam email comes from a different sender, so simply blocking the source doesn't work. They may be compromised email accounts or they are just fakes. So I have taken to answering them. I give a blurb that initially informs them that their account may be compromised. Then I go into a disconnected rant about spam. I call them names, laugh a lot, and generally berate them. Maybe, if I sound deranged enough, they will go away. Oddly enough, since I started answering them, the spam has slowed way down.
There aren't any links involved but they include a telephone number if you have a problem. One of these days, when I am really bored, I may give them a call.
