WRTC 2022
« on: December 14, 2022, 03:59:24 AM »

The World Radiosport Team Championship 2022 is most likely going to take place in July 2023 in Bologna, Italy.
Being a Politically Correct and law-abiding person, I wonder if there is any provision for conducting anti-doping tests during this event.
There is the World Anti-Doping Agency (in Montreal, Canada) which monitors the use of drugs in sports. The radiosport is considered by many a sport and should be included.
The Anti-Doping Convention of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg was signed by all member states, including Italy.
I have just looked at the WRTC web site and could not spot any relevant information.

Ham radio contesting is not a sport. It's an activity that requires a lot of skill to be good. Operators can be athletic, but being in WRTC or operating contests in general does NOT make you an athlete. Take a look around your next multi op group and tell me how many athletes you see ;)

They would likely find a high concentration of caffeine in all participants. ;D

For over nine years the U.S. government has considered eSports players to be athletes1. Amateur radio Radiosport seems to me to be similarly physical and mentally taxing. Therefore, might we consider Radiosport to be an actual sport?

I think they have a much bigger problem dealing with the Russian - Ukraine conflict spilling over than worrying about this.  At one point, I was going.  For completely unrelated reasons, I am no longer going.  With all of what I am seeing, I am not unhappy about it....

I think if you look at the list of ops, there is not a dope among them!

But, I believe at chess championship matches there is drug testing, so their is precedent for non-athletic championships. But, first you need an established list of banned substances to be defined by some authority over the championship.

Actually, I think first you need a reason to test. Usually a problem has to exist first - or an incentive. I think chess first started drug testing because it had to do so in order for chess to be played in the Olympics.

For example, I don't think any baking championships drug test/ But, if the Olympics came calling...

The current rules of the WRTC2022 indicate
12.7 The WRTC Contest is the equivalent of the Ham Radio Olympic Games.

The participants are required to provide audio recordings of the whole 24 hours of the contest, allow video and photographic documentation on site.
It is not improbable that some medical tests will be added - for example the so-called Covid-19, similar to other sporting events in recent times.
Blood samples can today be quickly evaluated for the presence of illegal substances. Law enforcement officers do it routinely.
Official statistics show that more than 20% of population in the USA and Western Europe use stimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine and others.

I personally care less about this and other competitions. However, in the light of recent restrictions and discussions about Amateur Radio contests, maybe the aspect of dope should be discussed as well. In particular during the Ham Radio Olympic Games.

I had a post on this forum about sleep deprivation a while ago. Read the symptoms after 24 hours without sleep as outlined by the CDC - a government agency.

N2SR, thank you for the link. I ordered the book on Kindle and highly recommend it.

That's why I posted the link.   ;)

I purchased the hardcover edition at Dayton, which is personally signed by Jim.   8)
