Knocking Myself Off Line When I Transmit
« on: December 15, 2022, 06:15:45 AM »

I never had any Internet Problems with my previous Internet Service Provider, but since I switched to Spectrum every time I transmit with my Amplifier on I knock myself off line.
I have a Yaesu FTDX 10 driving am Ameritron ALS 1300 amplifier. I am not overdriving my amp, and have everything adjusted correctly as far as ALC etc goes.
Any ideas ?

What type of antenna are you using when this happens? How close is the antenna to the house? Do you have a common mode choke / balun installed on your antenna coax? How much power can you run before the router drops out?

I also have Spectrum internet and had similar problems when I transmitted. I called Spectrum and they came out.
They swapped out my router and modem with different ones and that totally to care of my problem. Give them a call and I bet they will help.
Good luck. Jim. W5JJG

Sounds like a "fundamental overload" problem and the Spectrum eqpt is susceptable.
Have you contacted Spectrum about this? They may have filters for their eqpt.

little bit more info please.

What mode does this happen in, or is it in all modes.

Do you have a USB cable hooked up to the radio ?

Is your ALC line actually hooked up to the Amp, or are you just referring to the ALC on the Yaesu meter.

If completely remove the amp ( meaning just the rig and antenna feed line no aml hook up ) does it still happen then.

It happens on my wire 75 meter dipole antenna that runs right over my roof. Yes, I have a dual ferrite core 1 to 1 balun on my coaxial feedline at the antenna feed point. At 100 watts out I am fine, but once the amp is on it happens. I am running an ALC Line to the amp and have the ALC adjusted correctly. No USB cable hooked to the radio

If your Spectrum feed runs basically parallel with and/or close to your antenna, you need to choke the RF induced on the Spectrum coax shield.  Wind a few turns through a ferrite core and be sure the safety ground block is solidly connected to your AC power ground.  Works fine for me!

There is a small possibility that your 75 meter balun is saturating when running QRO. It is not common but it does happen depending upon construction details.

I would add a common mode choke where the coax enters the house.

You should also add common mode chokes to all cables in and out of the router. Some type 31 ferrite is the best choice. Type 43 is a close second.

Don't overlook having the provider come back to check their installation. Bad connectors, etc. can also cause these problems.

The Balun is a Balun Designs dual ferrite core 1 to 1 choke balun. All connections are tight, and since my dipole is coaxial fed, it is installed right at the feedpoint.
My Amplifier is a solid state Ameritron ALS 1300. It only puts out 1200 watts on peaks, so the Balun SHOULD be well within it's limits. SWR is a little bit over 2 to 1, but since it is 75 Meters and I use a tuner, I have not bothered to trim it down to 1 to 1.
What is really weird is back when I had Frontier Internet, I had zero problems!
It was not until the switch to Spectrum that all the **** started.

Had an outage one day and they installed a new router even though it wasn't needed.  They updated the equipment just because.  At some point I find out that RF kills the new router so I swapped it out with my back up router.  Not only is it RF immune but seems to perform better.
