Best way to clean powder coated equipment cabinet?
« on: December 19, 2022, 06:31:12 AM »

A lot of ham gear these days comes from the manufacturer painted with powder coated paint spray.  Simply wiping dust off your equipment cabinet often leaves a tell tail residue or smudge on the surface.  It's especially noticiable on black powder coated gear.  Does anyone have a suggestion on what works best to get good clean results?

In the distant past, there was a subclass of ar tists, known as drafters. They would use a small brush to sweep away eraser debris from their drawings. This brush would work somewhat well. An old t shirt works too.

Camel hair photo lense brush, if you can find one.

Yup, I always use Windex to clean cabinets.  Works good if you have to touch-up or repaint a cabinet too, as it leaves no residue.  Not always true of generic brands.  Use Goo Gone to clean tape residue or any stickiness, then Windex as a final step.

Those old cabinets were often housed in garage ham shacks and other environments with polution in addition to owners who smoked.  I had great success with boatanchors using "Simple Green" which I found the absolute best to dicolve any greasy substances... That stuff would clean nicotine from chassis and cabinets only requiring a soft brush for really gnarly stuff.

Windex, 409, Simple Green....
If you have some glue left from labels or tape, use WD 40 or Goo Gone.

Let either of the two soak for a little to break down the glue, wipe off and re do if necessary.

I use a Swifter to remove the loose dust / dirt. Then as many have stated Windex or some type of cleaner with a good rag.

Thanks everyone.  A little Windex spray and a microfiber cloth made the surface look like new again.
