Yaesu FT-DX10 or FT-710. Do they have voice recorders?
« on: December 22, 2022, 08:36:08 PM »

My voice is not as strong as it was a year ago, so I need to have a radio that can record my CQ call.  Will either of these YAESU radios do that? I haven't been able to find this out.

If anyone here knows of another radio in the same price range, feel free to recommend it.

Earlier this year, I asked this question about a Kenwood radio, but I decided against it.

The FTDX-10 has a voice recorder that will do what you want.  :)

The FT710 does have a built in voice recorder.  In a similar price range, the Icom 7300 also has a voice recorder.  They both require a SD card for the voice recorder to work.  The Yaesu 991A also has a voice recorder, but doesn't require a SD card.  The Icom 7100 also has a voice recorder, I can't remember if it requires a SD card or not.

I think you'll find that most modern radios offer a "Voice Keyer". Some, like the IC7300 and FTdx10 also have the functionality to record received audio which may be useful if your hearing is deteriorating too. Some are easier to use than others - Yaesus are particularly good because they offer the FH-2 remote control at a very reasonable price - a little keypad with half a dozen buttons on it that you can press to play back the memories. Icoms support similar functionality, but they do not offer an off-the-shelf controller - you have to build it yourself with a stack of buttons and resistors.

On the IC-7300 you can configure the fist mic up/down buttons to send memory 1 or 2 contents, no additional hardware needed. A four button playback box is very easy to make for the Icom radios, the circuit is in the manuals.

DXE sells the SOTABeams “Contest Console for Icom” external voice keyer memory box with four buttons and other convenience features.

You bought a fine radio. I had an IC-7300 and upgraded to the FTdx-10 a year ago. It is a real CW radio.
