ARTICLE: Could SETI detect an Earth-like civilization?

From the BigThink.Com website, a recent December 23, 2022 article ...
Ask Ethan: Could SETI detect an Earth-like civilization?
https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/seti-detect-earth/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&ICID=ref_fark

"Using Radio Waves, Earth is actively broadcasting and actively searching for intelligent civilizations.
But could our technology even detect ourselves?

Because we're both transmitting and listening, it leads us to wonder: how far away could we detect a
civilization at the same technological level that we're at?"

Enjoy!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all eHam family and friends.

The Bible and ancient text are full of alien encounters. Uneducated goat/sheep herders of 3000 years ago thought it was a God and wrote about it.

We need to mature much more before we are ready for first contact I'm afraid. Interesting reading though....

This strikes me as being counter-productive. We should be looking for intelligent life on this planet first.

When the above poster mentioned maturity, I thought of all those stupid tv shows that where transmitted, gilligans island, beverly hillbillys, green acres, but as we know the article did say those signals really don't go that far into space.
The WOW signal is a curious situation, I think I research it a little more on wikipedia,

Follow up article

...and than there's the recent discovery Tom Gauld (Cartoon) reported
in the online New Scientist magazine of October 5 2022 ...

Tom Gauld on messages from advanced alien civilisations

If you are more than about a light-day away from Earth you would need a fairly large array, pointed right at the inner system to receive anything at all.

Most of our RF output is pointed along the surface of the Earth (land-mobile, broadcast, etc..) and sending signals straight upwards is wasted energy unless you are pointing it right at a satellite.

With satellites in geosynchronous orbits it means that they still move across the galactic plane at the rate of Earth's rotation. If you were a distant receiver then you might be within the beamwidth of a signal that was intended for a geosynch satellite for maybe only a few seconds. (think of it like the beam of a lighthouse that sweeps, you will see a pulse of RF energy on a specific frequency).

The high-powered transmitters intended for space; military or research (radar mapping of the surface of the Moon or maybe taking a closer look at an asteroid) are very high power, but they too will sweep across the sky. Maybe longer if you tried to do a deep-space-network link to orbiters out near Mars or the outer planets.

Looking inwards, in the direction of Sol, the RF output of our entire planet is going to be buried under the energy output of our star.

You might be better off trying to send laser. At least you can aim it at something and the coherent signal that might be received at the far end would mean something to somebody.

This, and the popular theory that by the time an alien race has developed technology suitable for communicating over interstellar distances they're right at the brink of self-destruction.

Or they understand the limitations of an Einsteintian universe and simply don't bother trying.

Which Einstein admitted was his biggest blunder. The US and all superpower nations have already admitted there is technology flying around beyond our comprehension. Thery are already here and evidence says they have been here for thousands of years.

It's quite clear from existing streaming programming that we've not only received messages from other worlds but that media companies are actively capturing and rebroadcasting these, just to see what happens.

Seriously, now... you don't HONESTLY think this junk is coming from EARTH?  Somebodie's just messing with us!
