Looking for a QTH to DX from in Oceania/Asia
« on: December 24, 2022, 04:31:53 PM »

I have an unexpected 10 days of vacation I must use up before February 1st. Wondering if anyone can put me in touch with the owner(s) of any well equipped stations in the Oceania/Asia area I could DX from. Will make it financially worthwhile for the owner. Reciprocal licensing agreement with the USA is a plus. Point of departure will be Guam.............Thanks for any tips!!!

Reply from Hide, owner of the Palau DX shack:

Hello, Tom

Sorry, unlike the United States, very few Japanese people travel abroad since COVID19. This is because there are not many discount flights available.
There are still only a few Japanese staff at travel agencies in Palau. Probably around the end of 2023 it will be back to normal.

Until then, no services will be provided.

If anyone has any other tips please let me know. Willing to travel as far west as India. Getting a license will be difficult in such a short amount of time so reciprocal licensing is desirable...............100% CW operation.

The Philippines is kind of rare these days, at least in eastern NA.  Not P5 rare, but probably enough to be entertaining.  Zone 27 is a challenge on several bands.

I think that DU1IST has a well enough equipped station...

Please remember my callsign in the pile-ups.

 Funny you should mention DU1IST:

I emailed Jin, DU1IST just last week asking him if I could do a little DXing from his CRAZY shack. Look up his callsign on QRZ to see his Yagi with a 77 foot boom. It has 5 elements on 40 meters and 5 full sized elements on 30 meters. According to ClubLog's Most Wanted List the Philippines are ranked at #47 for the east coast on 30 meters CW...............Shooting fish in a barrel:)

Unfortunately Jin said he is now back in Japan for an extended amount of time so his shack is unavailable. This would have been the perfect place because of his crazy antennas & because round trip airfare is only $359.

From an east-coast US perspective, I'd be mighty grateful for a chance at either zone 24 or 26 on 80m (160 would be a bonus). There's just *nobody* operating 80 to NA from that region with a big enough station to regularly get into Z5.

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

There was a hotel on one of the Malaysian claimed Spratley Islands, operations from there counted for Spratley. I think N2OO would have some info.

I have operated from the Layang Layang Dive Resort Hotel back in 2009.  I was N1UR/9M6 and it counted as Spratly.

Not sure its current status.  You could fly over on a daily flight on Twin Otter from KK.

There is zero equipment there.  Everything has to be flown over and they are VERY strict on weight.  Back in 2009, it cost me $600 in extra fees and I only had one large gym bag and a fully loaded gold bag carrier.

At the time, they only opened as of March 15 or 20 each year as they were concerned about Typhoons between Nov 1 and early March.

I made about 10,000 Qs from there, about 70% CW and 30% SSB.

Get a hold of Dom.

His company is up to 4 vessels now (you'll be hearing about them next year).

He's got a great place in Fiji and lots of radios/amps. Keyers too!

V85A has a terrific station.

Been there, done that..............For those (un)lucky enough to ever experience DXing from Brunei the first thing you notice is the terrible, terrible SSB QRM in the CW portions of the bands. It literally makes the CW segments unusable. The vast majority is generated by people in Indonesia & Malaysia. Throw in a little Cambodia & Thailand into the mix and you have a recipe for disaster for CW enthusiasts. Many people in Indonesian villages use cheap Chinese HF rigs to communicate with people in other villages. Reliable village to village communication can be had on 20/40 & 80 meters. These unlicensed SSB malcontents hone in on the most "quiet" parts of the bands to operate SSB. Meaning the CW portions.

I gotta give credit to anyone who can work CW DX from that part of the world due to the absolutely atrocious SSB QRM in the CW segments.
