This thing has been a zoo so far.  I have zero decodes on 30m and about 5 minutes worth on 20m.  There is no way all those calling can here the DX, and obviously the many calling on the odd time slot are not hearing him.  What's the point?  That, plus all the stations calling each other, US to DX and even US to US stations calling to each other or calling CQ.  This morning on 20m I tuned in at the time he was first spotted yesterday on 20m and withing 5 minutes I started decoding him, mostly working Japanese with three streams.  As soon as I saw him work a US station I started calling.  He worked be on the 4th call and then just disappeared, no more decodes after that.

Sure and some amps/finals have a CW mode switch that pushes it into class C bias. This can be a real efficiency advantage for FT-8 operation.

You can tell that I don't follow the amplifier market at all, so you taught me something new.  Thanks!

Are these commercially available products?

I completely get why Class C would be better for FT8, because of the duty cycle, heat, and all that.  As you say, that goes completely out the window with multiple carriers.

I certainly don't. Someone was screwing around with me earlier, then my software de-selected 1st/even somehow and I incurred the wrath of the universe briefly (and rightfully). Damnit, if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any at all with this guy. I'm 100% convinced that I have somehow run afoul of the DX overlords of late. I am absolutely cursed with this operation, absolutely. I even tried from three RHR stations and couldn't get through.

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Looks like I am good in the log which is certainly a relief given the frequent pirate activity and the fact that I was not at all confident that my station could make it through to a single op DXpedition to such a rare location. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I think the timing certainly helped since it was late on Christmas Eve. I managed to make it through with my 40m dipole loaded up on 30m, and just minutes after my QSO, the band closed. What a wonderful Christmas present!

Best of luck to all those still on the hunt!

From the FT8WW QRZ page, no need to send your grid square:

Please turn off Tx 1 -- double click on the radio button next to Tx 1 in WSJT.  This will make the QSOs faster."  "Ask your local FT8 expert for help if you need it.

My smart refrigerator worked him on 40. It has been talking smack to all the other smart appliances in the house.

No QSO yet for me. I was hearing and seeing his three streams last night on 20 m, but had very few decodes. One big drawback about FT and PSK is that they are seriously disrupted by polar paths. The Auroral artefacts really destroy intelligibility. SSB and CW can get by, but these phase-shift digital modes don't do well.
This morning, I was decoding well on 30 m, but there wasn't a crack in the pileup I could find.
I tried for a little while last night on 20 m CW, but that became a complete zoo in no time. So many transmitting on his frequency that it became impossible.
I'm hoping the clowns settle down, and propagation settles later in the week.

024400 Tx 2901 ~ FT8WW N4UFO -17
024415 -14 0.2 470 ~ N4UFO FT8WW R-09
024430 Tx 2901 ~ FT8WW N4UFO RR73
024445 -     0.2 410 ~ N4UFO FT8WW RR73

This will be Mixed 299!!! Here's hoping for 300 in a couple months.  :)

And for anyone who thinks their refrigerator can do it... I saw FT8WW call a big gun in W6 like 20 TIMES! After my contact, that W6 is STILL calling him. So how did a guy with 90 watts and an antenna 5 feet above the ground get him in the log? I knew WHERE to transmit!!! Exactly the same as I did in a CW pileup... it's not whether a key or a keyboard, it's about how you strike with your hammer.  8)

I agree. At the end it is the same like any other pileup, CW or SSB. The only difference is that FT8 is more technologically complicated, but most of us can learn it.

Also from the FT8WW QRZ page, confirmation he is using MSHV NOT/NOT WSJT-X/JTDX F&H.

Skip the grid, he does not need it. The line moves faster this way, in addition to increasing the chances of a complete contact.

Congratulations!

BTW, FT8WW really faded into the noise for me at around 04Z.  Guess what?  That same W6 was still being called by FT8WW!  I can't explain any of it.  I hope the pile-up thins out over the next week or two.  Or, at least, that the W6 either works FT8WW or goes away on vacation.  That'd free up 33% of QSO bandwidth by itself.

He just QSYed to 20m FT8, but no copy in NC. It seems that stations to the north and to the west are hearing him, but not so much in my neck of the woods.

If the W6 was still being *called* by FT8WW, then the Crozet bot needs a reset. ;)
