New laptop
« on: December 25, 2022, 11:47:53 AM »

I got a new Dell laptop for Christmas with windows 11 on it (yuk) Tried putting an Avast anti virus on it and a popup comes up and says you do not need an anti virus, and windows defender is enough for your a/v needs. Never just ran defender before, has anyone here just ran defender?

We have defender on a couple of our PCs.  Seems to work ok.

It has more to do with your online behavior than any AV software. Nothing will give you total security if you're careless online.

3rd party AV software isn't necessary these days. Defender will give you plenty of protection.

I have three Windows 11 computers (including laptop) running defender, and like 5BWAZ sez, it has more to do with your behavior than the anti-virus software.

You need to take the laptop out of S Mode. If windows 11 is in S mode, you can only download apps from the Windows store. Do a search a search to take it out of S Mode and you will be able to download Avast.

Simple you do not need an add-on AV. It is like adding Toroid's to control RFI, a waste of time, just do not follow any ham radio operators instructions to set up your antenna, power, or grounding.

While I like Avast, I too have just been using Defender.  From what I have read it is now as good as any.  If you decided use Avast, be sure to totally turn off Microsoft Defender.  You will just get problems running both.  Agree with Windows 11, but we will all get use to it.

The advice above is pretty spot on. In todays world of cyber security, 3rd party antivirus software is not needed. None of them are perfect, and windows defender is as good as any of them. Just make sure that you run windows update every couple of days to make sure you're current.

If you feel you must have a second layer of protection, download the free version of Malwarebytes. Make sure it's not running in the background, keep it updated, and do a periodic scan.

Defender is all you need for your everyday AV. Just be smart online and don't click on attachments, even from friends.

I have been using W11 for over a year now and I keep it up to date. It has it's good points and it's bad points.

I don't use any anti-virus other than the built in Windows Defender. It is not obvious, when you are connected to the internet, but Windows Defender downloads a antivirus update every single day. Sometime even twice a day. It all happens in the background. You can view these updates under "Settings -> Windows Update -> Update History -> Definition Updates".

I do agree with the one comment above.  If you need/want to ad anything, the add Malwearbytes.  Actually have used it for years.  It Works.

As stated by others, Windows Defender is adequate and the addition of Malwarebytes is worthwhile.

I have been using Defender since its introduction, never a problem. I would not install any other AV, free or otherwise.

As already mentioned en passant, the first thing I do with a new laptop - I also got a new one for Christmas - is to get it out of mode S. Next, delete all the unwanted garbage that is pre-loaded.

What’s with “yuk”? Nobody forced you/your relative/friend to buy a laptop with Windows 11 on it.

I have a friend who insists that Windows XP is perfectly OK and they hate Windows versions later than XP.

As someone who has used Windows 11 for some time on two laptops (one came with it, the other upgraded from Windows 10), I cannot fault it.

One is used by my YL for home/office computing, the other by myself for ham radio applications (portable contest operating with Minos logging, EZNEC, Spice circuit modelling, PCB layout, email via Winlink and Pactor, plus Office Professional).

There are significant security enhancements in Windows 11, compared to earlier versions.

Anyone care to elaborate on what the supposed problems are with Windows 11?
