I am asking about the old style coax connectors common on old Heath gear and many old commercial pieces as well.  It looks like a PL259 without the center pin.  I hope someone can give me the correct nomenclature and a possible source.  I would have provided a pic of the female connector for this type, but haven't had any luck inserting a pic in this message.

Are you talking about the Switchcraft 2501F mic connector? Also known as Amphenol MC1F.

SO-239 Female UHF Connectors but more likely the Mic connector in previous reply  :)

If it is a non-standard antenna connector it is best to replace it with a SO-239 chassis mount connector unless you are restoring a "collectors edition" rig.

Thanks for the lead on part numbers.  I'll check it out.  Specifically, I need the part to build a test lead for a Simpson 311-3 VTVM.

Just install a chassis BNC beside it!  Wire in parallel.

You'll find the Switchcraft 2501F is still easily available at Mouser, Digikey and eBay sellers, amongst others.  It pops up quite a bit in the classic instrument and amplifier world and I bought a handful a while ago from a local guitar shop.  The immediate use was a probe connector replacement for an AWA Voltohmyst VTVM and a mic connector for my Heathkit DX60B transmitter.

You are right about the PL259 similarity: I have seen one or two people shorten the pin on a PL259 and use it with the Switchcraft panel socket. But that's a bit too agricultural for my liking!

I'm one of those who shortened a pin on a PL259 and put a BNC on the other end of a short cable. This is for my HP signal generator. I'm now considering this guy... https://www.ebay.com/itm/115655145666
