Yaesu FT-2500 Microphone
« on: December 26, 2022, 04:11:12 PM »

Club received a donated Yaesu FT-2500 2m rig w/ dead MH-37 mic.  Will the Yeasu MH-36c mic work with the 2500?

Thomas,

Try as I might, I could not find an MH-37 microphone. The MH-36c should work for basic push-to-talk. The modular microphone/TNC pinout for the FT-2500 is : 1-CALLBUTTON; 2-RX AUDIO; 3-PTT; 4-MIC TX AUDIO; 5-GROUND; 6-+5VDC; 7-UP; 8-DOWN. Good luck in your quest.

It is not "plug and play".
The FT2500 came with either a mh26g8j (Europe) or a mh27a8j (rest of world) microphones.  They do use the same electret 2kohm element but with an 8 pin connector.  The newer radios use a 6 pin connector.
More important, the older books labelled the pins in the reverse Japanese way... pin 1 is far right while pin 8 is far left compared to our US pin1 left and pin 8 right, so references to pin numbers are confusing.
The mic and PTT can be made to work, AND the Rx audio is available for a simple packet type connection in the jack.  But you will have to get the proper pins connected.  You cannot just plug the 6 pin mic into the 8 pin radio and expect it to work.
I suspect someone purchased a mh36 mic to replace the mh27 and could not get it to work... so gave it away.

To clarify, I don't have an MH-36.  The radio came with the MH-27 which has a history of failing. I knew later models of the 2500 went to the MH-36, but wasn't aware of the change in mic connectors from 8 to 6 pin.  There is a 'spin off' MH-27, but it has no DTMF features.

The MH27 normally fails right at the RJ45 connector... the element, switch, and electronics stay OK.  So probably just replacing the connector or cable itself could fix it.  They do sell just the cord with connector if you wish to try.

The mic suffers from leaky electrolytics that plagued radios of this vintage.  The capacitor company made a pile of defective components.  You can replace, the caps, or I used an MH-31, which was plug and play.
