FT-950, what's it worth?
« on: January 01, 2023, 10:45:35 AM »

I have an opportunity to buy a used, but nice condition FT-950 that comes with the Yaesu desk mike.  Seller is asking $600, which seems a bit steep to me for a 20+ year old large radio.  Or is this fair?  I like the older Yaesu transceivers and was planning to use this as a backup rig.  I'm thinking that $500 tops is the value.  No power supply included.

Thanks.

Your buying used... could be good or bad.
I know I'm keeping mine.

If it's in good condition and it works, $600 is a very fair price with the Mic included.  I own two of them, plus an Icom 7300 and I always keep going back to the 950.  I bought mine new in 2008 for $1,300.  I bought a used one a year or so ago for over $700 as I recall.
I think the 950 is a great radio.

I would be interested in knowing what you like more about the 950 that keeps you going back to it.
I too have both a 950 and an 7300, so I am curious about your perspective.
I have no ax to grind with either radio, so I'm not trying to start a flame-war or anything.

I dont't think that the FT-950 is a 20+ y old radio. I believe it came out in 2008 or 2009.
I bought mine used in 2011, and I am still very fond of it. I missed the opportunity to buy the AC0C roofing filter, but alternatives have been published. The IF I/O allows for easy addition of a preselector, something you would have a hard time doing with more modern radios. The connectivity is great, the construction is solid, the radio is easy to service, and it's a beauty. I say $600 is a fair deal for the radio, if it's in good condition.

Yeah, your not thinking of a 920 are you?
The 950 was a unique radio of its own, even though it was short lived.  I have had lots of Yaesu radios and this is the only one that i have never owned and still want one.

Thanks for the replies so far and glad to hear that the price is fair.  I have a nice FT-920 to sell and wanted to see that gone before picking up another rig.  So far, no takers.  Maybe my asking price is a bit too high at $550 OBO?  If I get between $400-$450 I'll be happy and will have a nice upgrade to a newer radio that will compliment my collection.

And F4GFT - you're right.  It looks like this transceiver was first released ~2007.

Well as luck would have it, I sold my FT-920 and then picked up the FT-950 later in the day.  It's set up in my shack and I've already made a couple of CW and SSB contacts with it.  I really like it and for an older rig (compared to my FTdx10) it's got a lot of nice features.  Very nice looking too!  I'll be playing with it a lot in the next few days and have already read quite a bit of the manual.  I think I'm going to enjoy this one.

Thanks for all the inputs.

I've owned and enjoyed several FT-950s, they are a good value for $600.
Hope you enjoy it.
