HOLIDAY WEEKEND OVER HERE, FOLKS.  ARRL HQ is closed both Sunday and Monday, staff will be back in the building Tuesday for normal hours.  The error message suggests that a server hiccuped and will need to be restarted.  HNY and gud DX in 2023!

I actually got logged in but there's a huge backlog of logs to be processed.  Way slow.

Check here:  www.arrl.org/logbook-queue-status

Everything appears to be okay now. The website is no longer so slow and uploads/downloads function okay, too.

Yes, working fine now but still the massive backlog.  No major contests, I wonder why so many logs?

Believe it or not, some people only log once a year. Yep. They play all year, they don't give a rats hat about confirmations, AND just to do us all a favor they dump their logs at the end of the year. And this is what happens.

Server running ok now.
It had a huge backlog of end of year logs, including mine, which took about three hours yesterday to process.
I've just submitted my annual DXCC application. I did quite well, with 92 new Challenge points.

Most logging programs can upload to LoTW automatically I don't understand why people wait for months even years to do it,

I was able to log in, but my latest upload, 17 QSOs, are not appearing in my totals.

A check of the system shows a backlog of about 10 hours (+/-).

Was able to login just now 01:20 utc, but still very slow here. I'm sure the backlog of uploads has slowed everything down.

At 7:20 UTC, backlog still large:

I have noticed that several folks do indeed upload at long intervals (3 months, six months, a year).  Perhaps year end is a particularly fruitful time.  I have only noticed particular DX with this habit.  But, it is probably fairly widespread.

Everyone has their own strategy.

How many on-line log services does one join?  The most popular are LOTW, Clublog, eQSL, QRZ.com's log and Ham Radio Deluxe (probably about in that order).

How frequently does one upload to these?

Clublog is usually uploaded fairly often because DX stations use frequent uploads as a "dupe" reduction strategy.  That isn't everyone, but it keeps the numbers down.

Some upload to LOTW with an eye to QSL management.  More frequent uploads cuts down on the number of "buro" requests (there are a substantial fraction of people who, when they learn DX1DX is an LOTW user will wait before sending any kind of card).  Less frequent uploads results in more direct requests.

I have processed some of my lotwreport.adi and these suggest it is on a rough continuum -- you'll get uploads for a QSO years later sometime.  But, the majority that ever happen are within 90 to 120 days after the QSO and quite a decent fraction during the first week after the QSO.  Still, there is a long tail.

This would also apply to other services.

Not everyone cares about (e.g.) eQSL or QRZ.com awards programs.  Such individuals may upload to those sources primarily as an occasional courtesy.  Many contesters probably do the same with LOTW.  Who knows how many resident DX (who may already have all the ARRL awards they want) do the same?

So, some of this is probably a kind of "triple witching hour" where the annual, semi-annual, and quarterly uploaders are all uploading at year end.

There are several ham web interfaces I have worked with recently.  Many of these suggest  that the big cost is connecting at all and until the volume of data gets really insane, a small amount and a big amount aren't much different in cost.  Still, a huge volume of requests is a huge volume of requests.

A note from W5OV on the LoTW listserve:

A few things seem to have contributed to the “outage”.  A db FULL backup just finished, numerous users are running on demand reports( end of year?), and there’s a huge amount of uploading going on.

Many FT8 users upload after each QSO.  This practice is totally unnecessary and the overhead of processing thousands of one QSO files is enormous. A daily upload, or maybe, every 10 to 25 QSOs, would be better and would greatly reduce processing overhead.

Everything has been restarted, and appears normal.

Happy New Year!

Bolding is mine.
