Yaesu FTM-200D and DN Noise
« on: January 05, 2023, 09:35:45 AM »

I am looking to purchase a mobile rig and was prepared to purchase the FTM-200D, but after reading several posts complaining of a "hum" noise on DN mode, I hesitate.
One reviewer posted regarding the "Hum", but came to the conclusion that it was "not that big of deal" and was happy with the radios performance.
I e-mailed tech support with DM Engineering and received this reply :

Brad,

Thanks for your question(s).

I am familiar with that issue as I had a fellow ham friend with that very issue.

In most cases the fix is a simple one. When installing the radio run the power cable directly to the battery.
By this I mean run both the positive and the negative power leads to the battery. The hum in most case is picked up
by the radio because the power is being derived thru the fuse panel as are most all other items on the vehicle and therefore
you have the hum or in some cases a whine.

Hope this helps.

Would y'all follow through with the purchase ?
Thanks in advance,
Brad

I have an FTM-400 wired directly to the battery in a 1998 Dodge Dakota. When I installed my first radio in this vehicle I had a little bit of alternator whine on receive. It wasn't extreme but just enough to be annoying. I solved the problem with one of these noise filters from Powerwerx.

Do you think the filter would be effective in a shack with a  power supply ?

I've never owned a FTM-200D, but do have a FTM-100D and several FTM-400's which I've owned for years (and no I don't want to sell them).  I have never heard any of my FTM rigs produce a hum (in any mode).  My first thought when hearing about a hum is that the power supply being used is faulty.  It's good to remember that sometimes the complaints being written in these Reviews are coming from very inexperienced individuals.  There are many very inexpensive power supplies on the market too.  If you have a way to contact the person(s) who wrote these "FTM-200D hum reports" you might want to do so and suggest they disconnect their power supply and temporarily substitute a 12vdc battery and see if your hum does away.

   Understood, thank you.
My first choice was the FTM-400, until Yaesu announced that they were discontinuing that model, for the inability to source components.

Does it have a hum if you operate it off a battery?
What does Yaesu say about this?  DX Engineering is merely the seller of the radio.
If you have a dummy load you can hear what your transmit sounds like with another radio.  Do YOU hear a hum?

   Hello Mike,

I haven't purchased the radio as of yet, only going from a reviewer's video. The hum was not detectable in the vehicle.

Do you have any C4FM activity in your area?
I do not see a "hum" only when using C4FM as a problem with the power lead.  What eqpt, if any, do you have available for testing this... if you get the radio?

I bought the ftm-400xdr last month because they are reduced in price and discontinued or not you can not beat a three year warranty.

There are several Fusion repeaters in my area , but I am unable to determine activity. At present I only have a Yaesu FT-70d and cannot, at this time, reach any repeaters. (Yep I'm a Noob) The only equipment I have is a multimeter.

Is there a legitimate concern in parts availability should the radio need to be returned to Yaesu for repair, or is this a non issue ?

It couldn't hurt...

The announcement of the discontinuance was only made a short time ago.  If you move now, you might be able to get one before they go out of stock.
