Icom CT-17 computer interface question
« on: January 05, 2023, 02:53:58 PM »

Hello All -
I bought an Icom 756Pro3 last year and it came with a well done home brew interface that was a copy of the CT-17 interface unit that Icom has sold. I am planning on selling it to a ham who is wondering if it will allow him to use digital operation (I'm assuming FT-8) but using his Icom 746Pro.
Is this possible?  Any comments appreciated.

How would we know if an untested home made cable is compatible with anything?
You might want to test it.

Short answer; No. Using something like a signalink or Digirig makes things a lot simpler and at that point you don't need a CT-17 or equivalent interface.

Long version:

The CT-17 can only control the radio , it doesn't do anyting with audio.
So if it's the interface is an accurate copy of the CT-17, in order to do FT-8 or any other "digital mode" that requires audio, you'll still need to take care of that in addition to using the interface for controlling the radio.

You could take audio from the radio and feed it to the computer and also take audio from the computer and feed it to the radio without an interface, just using the right jacks/plugs/connectors.

Using something like a signalink or Digirig makes things a lot simpler and at that point you don't need a CT-17 or equivalent interface.
