Extending Wireless/Wi/Fi
« on: January 08, 2023, 12:48:49 PM »

My pole barn is about 75 yards from my home.  Try as I might I can't make the connection between the two using "Range Extenders".  I'm trying to avoid cutting holes in my house or burying cable to the barn. Any wireless option would be considered,  Thanks for the help in advance

Log onto e.g. Amazon to see what is available commercially. Wifi rx systems listed there note ranges of 1/2 mile to 3 miles.

Several yagi antennas listed.

You need a pair of what are called WiFi Bridges, they are different than range extenders.
Ubiquiti has a good selection of them, there is probably a large selection of them on Amazon as well.
They usually have directional antennas which gives them superior signal strength.

Here are a couple I recommended to a friend:

You could put a directional antenna on your router/AP.
I reccomend you using 2,4Ghz

There are a number of possibilities but using a wireless 'bridge' is one of the easiest solutions.  At 75 yards, the bridge/antenna units could be placed indoors.  Stay at 2.4GHz or lower (no 5 GHz) to mitigate building absorptions.   Relatively cheap to implement - do a web search.  Many manufacturers - check out Amazon.

If your current router is tucked away, either "expose it more" or add another WiFi router configured as an access point "facing the barn".
You might have better luck at 2.4 GHz rather than 5GHz

I have sucessfully connected two routers wirelessly using 2.4GHz about 60 ft apart so I'll vouch for the first 60 feet :)

When I was messing around with "HSMM" I was able to get about half a mile from a pair of WRT54 routers with yagis.  The Ubiquity nanostations and other similar fixed wifi gear has modes to create point to point links.  The elephant in the room is antenna height, gain and any obstructions.  Provide a clear path and even basic wifi equipment would be able to make the haul.

Here is a possibility.

Kim komando router quiz...

They recommend this one below.
Read the reviews on Amazon. Good line of site
( with no trees in the path of the signal) One reviewer said his two buildings were about 1 mile apart.

Back in the 1990s, when WiFi was being developed - and before IEEE802.11 had a standard - Zarlink developed its own protocol. With 'standard'2.4GHz powers and helical antennas. we got a range of over 30 miles across Monterey Bay and the limit was propagation time to get an ACK back. So try a pair of gain antennas - you shouldn't need much gain.

As was usual with Zarlink management at the time, because there wasn't major payback in 18 months, the whole project got canned and they went on to keep repeating the process of canning everything that didn't pay for it self in absurdly short periods of time....

There is also an old saying..."The best engineering work done at those frequencies is done with a chain saw."

Remove any branches that may or could be in the way.

For the longest time I could not get Comcast to extend service to my new home on my parcel of land. I did have service to a double-wide on the front of the property but to get to the new house in the woods (and across a ravine) required they take a longer route along the ridge line (I live on a mountain).

What I did was to get a pair of surplused frequency-hopping, spread spectrum radios that operate in the 902-928 MHz band. With a pair of Yagi antennas they could burn through the thousand feet of trees to give me an internet connection at my new house with 1 megabit/sec of speed. I ran that way for a few years until a more creative solution came along.

It was not blazing fast but I had internet connectivity. I could not stream video but I could browse the internet and watch (low res) Youtube videos.

I also picked up a pair of Ubiquiti Air-Max units and those worked until lightning ate one of them, then I was back to the other radios for a while.
