Need suggestions for running radiating wire on/in support
« on: January 13, 2023, 11:42:44 AM »

I've got bold after getting away with a 19' vertical mounted to my privacy fence, nobody has complained and no nasty HOA letters so far. So I'm going replace it with a 84' end feed between two 16' poles mounted to my fence at 20' total height. I'm going to run the paracord down through the end support to a weight to tension the wire, at the other end at the feed point I would like to do the same running the radiating wire down through the support pole. I'm using 2 16' painters poles that have a 8' fiberglass section, and upper section is an 8' octagon shaped aluminum tube. I may be overthinking this but I'm not sure if I need to actually make the 8' aluminum section part of the antenna? Would running the wire through the aluminum section be fine without a physical connection?

If I understand your plan correctly, yes indeed the aluminum section of your support will effectively be part of your antenna.

Thus whatever impedance matching you obtain using an 84 ft. radiator will not be what you expect. The very low height of the proposed antenna will also affect your match expectations.

Keep in mind that you don't want any conductive part of your antenna system to be touchable by any person from the ground.

20' is all I can go height wise for now. If the HOA don't say anything I might push it up another 5-10 feet.

What band(s) or frequencies are you trying to cover?

Primarily 40-10 would like to have some capability on 80 but not expecting much.
I've got a terminated folded dipole going up in the attic replacing an end fed 36' that covers 40-10 as well.

First, you will have to check your poles to see
if you actually can run a rope or wire down the
inside.  Some telescoping poles will work, while
others may have locking cams at the bottom of
each section that block the tubing.

Given the proposed length, you likely will need
guy ropes off the ends of the poles to keep them
straight, unless you use very light wire.  In that
case, I’d either run the wire down the guy rope
or terminate it at the top of the mast.  Running
it inside a metal mast may cause detuning and/or
arcing, partly depending on how well the wire is
centered in the tube and the insulation.

Remember that the free end of a wire is a high
voltage point.  Granted, detuning isn’t as much
of an issue since you are using a tuner anyway,
But it can shift the effective length to one that
isn’t as convenient to match.

I just love Eham and QRZ. The #1 place to shop for how to break rules and get scammed. Hams motto is" Rules, we don't need no stinking rules". Go to Eham and QRZ to find out how break every rule and code in the book.

What are you talking about? what are you referring to?

So I've rethought the layout of the antenna, going with a 25' fiberglass pole that will put me at 28' and just run a slopper off it to the fence post on the other side of the yard. I think that might be easier to get away with than 2 poles and simpler setup with a weight and pully on the rope end. Plus no metal in the support to contend with. Hoping I can get a 107' wire up, but will settle for 84'
