APRS maps
« on: January 14, 2023, 06:41:12 PM »

I'm not sure if it is something I did or not...I keep track of a few friends driving 18 wheelers..So when I open the google maps aprs, I find them fine, but the map more or less does not exist, I used to be able to zoom out and find the state and city where they were.
What did I do or did website change something???

Thanks Tom K5VWZ

Hessu, the person behind aprs.fi had been using google maps.  Unfortunately, google decided to send him a very steep bill.  This week, he  began using openstreetmaps for maps and is still working on tweaks to make it more functional.

There is a long history (over a decade) between him and the google folks.  I hope google will reconsider.  But for now, I think we're stuck with openstreetmaps until something better is found.

Easy solution, quit using antiquated methods no one uses anymore. Everyone of your trucker friends has a cell phone. All you have to do is have them turnon Location Sharing and add you as a friend. Not only can you see where they are at, you can zoom in and see detailed photographs of the area, track their speed and direction. So anytime you want to stick your nose in their business, all you gotta do is get on a cell phone, desktop and like devices to locate them.

Personally, if a friend or family member asked me to share my location, and a few have, I tell them to fold that request five ways and stick it where the moon does not shine.

We use it for SOTA a lot so that chasers can tell where we are in relation to the summit.  Activators can also see where other activators are so they may decide to hang out for a summit to summit contact.  Balloons use it for tracking.  Many other uses than the typical "where u at?"

Just because you don't have a use for it doesn't mean others don't.
