OK Thanks all..

I post such questions and usually result is educational.

In other parts of these forums some jerks label as 'TROLL'. To them 'troll' is posting a similiar question a few months later. Like a battery question.

I have amps with tubes BUT all this Europe disruption I am not sure if any tube becomes available at a good price. China ? Who needs tubes ? Commercial all solid-state. Audio people.

It would seem just having an amp with mid-power rating might be nice. (besides legal limit) Then the prices of coarse.

Power does equal DB gain and for weak signal work ? I did use an Ameritron 811H in the past and that seemed not to make much difference even on 160 to legal limit. On higher bands maybe 10 watts might bounce who knows where.

I am not sure it makes sense to even rehab iold amps sitting on. Dentron Clipperton L  DRAKE L7 Ameritron 811H (2) Ameritron 4-572'B Amp  and a 82  with the 2 3-500's. Price of the 82 now ? Was a fraction of now. Probably all I need is fresh tubes and getting old. (me)

A ps ? Who would know about power supplies ? Invest in power supply ? I always used 220v but if ever a 12v supply the rating desired ? 75 amps ok ?

I can't figure out if you're asking a question or making a statement?
I guess I'm too old but this post just totally confuses me.. Are you thinking out loud and just posting your thoughts?

I am thinking out loud I think. I often have little time and things go into 'fast mode'. My brain when going solid state started thinking about power supplies. I sit on 30 amp or 35... What are these 75 amp ones and other large ?

ok--at least the Ameritron 600 watt amp :::

100-130VAC or 220-250VAC, 50/60 Hz. Wired for
120VAC. The ALS-600PS draws less than 12 amps
at 120VAC, and less than 6 amps at 230 VAC. The
ALS-600SPS draws less than 14 amps at 120VAC,
and less than 7 amps at 240VAC

-- and assume non-switching supply preferred...

(Ameritron not my choice but fast research)

Can't edit or delete.

I by mistake posted a question about power supply needs THINKING about other things around here and the fact only sitting on a 35 amp one. Somebody questioned my 'thinking'. I responded. hmmmm Why do I need.....

I was fast thinking about say description here

https://mfjenterprises.com/collections/power-supply/products/mfj-4275mv#description

The Ameritron 500

-Exciter Drive - less than 100 watts input gives full output. -Power Supply Requirements - requires 14 VDC at 80 amperes peak current for PA transistors and separate line for 14 - 16 VDC at 4 amperes for control and bias circuits. Made in USA.

I owned an ALS-500M mobile amp and did not like it at all. It put out 400 watts tops and the current meter overshot and banged against its stop with every DIT. I sold it and the mobile radio driving it, replacing them with a 200 watt Kenwood TS-480HX mobile radio.

Quote from: W8JI
I have long told people, over and over again, to NEVER use an ALS500 at home on big antennas. I constantly remind people at Ameritron to steer people out of the ALS500 for home use. It is acceptable as a mobile amp, but not the IM performance needed for home use.

Quote from: W8JI
The ALS500 was never intended as a home amplifier. Like all 12 volt amplifiers it has more IMD and splatter than a higher voltage amplifier. The ALS600 for example runs at 50 volts, and besideds more power has IMD and splatter about equal to a good tube amp.

W8JI designed the ALS500.
