Zone 23 to zone 5 on 12m digital
« on: January 21, 2023, 03:57:54 PM »

Hi, all,

I'd like to get zone 23 on 12m digital to complete digital WAZ on that band. Spot searches for zone 23 stations on 12m are not encouraging. Most seem to be active only between 0600-1000Z, when there is no propagation to zone 5. As I write, it's about 0000Z, and I'm decoding JA, VK, ZL, HL, as usual.

What is my best strategy for snagging this rarity?

I was sitting on 12 and never copied him. Also, he doesn't show up in QRZ. Are you sure that's the correct call?

Did copy China (BG5CNL, zone 24) on 12 FT8, though.

I have Z23 on each band 10-80 and they were all JTs. Have JT1BH for 12M, but according to the Zed, he's SK. Worked him Mar 2002 @ 00:22Z. My strategy has always been search, pounce, and watch the spots.

I think the call is BG9NJY.  Copied him the other day but I don't remember on which band.

My antenna isn't the best on 12m, so I do not yet have zone 23 there, but I have a number on 15m. It appears all of my zone 23 QSOs on that band have been in the spring months in the 12z hour or the 01/02z hour. I would suspect that as the solar cycle has ramped up since then, propagation will likely be supported on 12m at those times as well.

My log shows digital QSOs with BG0BBB, BG9NJY, BG0CAB, and JT1BV on 15m. In addition to those same calls, I also see JT1CO and JT1CS (my only zone 23 CW QSO) on other bands. BG9NJY and BG0CAB have been particularly active in my experience.

Look for a Chinese DX-pedition to 0 or 9 land.
It can be quite a distance from Zone 25 to that part of China.  This will affect propagation.

Is there any particular group that runs such DXpeditions?

There is more activity now in zone 23 than ever before.

I remember people relying on a station or two in that one Russian oblast  in zone 21 twenty years ago.  It was that or JT1CO in those days.

But, there are a handful of resident DX in BY's zone 23 (a subset of BY9s and all BY0s plus a few others).  Look up the official CQ Zone description to find all the BYs that are in 23. It's more than you think, at least as far as call signs go.

And, maybe look into that one Russian oblast.  I don't know who is active from there, but if you see that particular prefix, go for it.

So, as far as zone 23 goes, we're in a bit of a golden age, comparatively.

Looked in my log and found I worked 3 Chinese stations in Z23 between 2019 & 2022. Called them for WPX, and they uploaded to LoTW the same day. BD0AAI, BG0CAB, & BG0BBB were on 20M & 30M FT8. That's not 12M, but they are active and upload to LoTW, and may possibly get on 12M. They all have their logs on their QRZ page, and BG0BBB is showing recent 12M activity on FT4/FT8.

Here's CQ's official list for zone 23:

Quote
Zone 23. Central Zone of Asia: JT (Mongolia), UA0Y, BY3G‑L (NeiMenggu), BY9G‑L (GanSu), BY9M‑R (NingXia), BY9S‑Z (QingHai) and BY0.

Note that some BY3s qualify, some BY9s qualify and all BY0 qualify.

Note also the "sleeper" UA0Y oblast that somehow ended up on zone 23.  I remember back in the early '90s, a DXer colleague at my workplace, who lived in New York state, figured out some specific UA0Y station was active on 80 and worked it that way.  Zone 23 on 80 for me, years later, was JT1CO and it was and still is one of the great QSOs of my ham "career".

But the BY activity in 23 really makes it a new ballgame.  I worked a BY station in 23 for my DX Marathon counter in 2021 and 2022.

I worked UA0YAY on both 10 and 12m on CW.  Never got a QSL and although his last upload to LoTW was 2021, it was never confirmed that way. Used to be UA0Y was the was to work Z23 as there was no activity from BY and very little from JT.
