My two crazy ham radio stories
« on: January 23, 2023, 02:16:17 AM »

The first. After I passed my code test, my first hf contact was a person with the callsign from my code test.

The second ham story. tonight, couldn’t sleep - yesterday had just set up a shortwave radio, with an outside antenna, with headphones by my bed. I was sending Paul Hansen (radio repair guy) a text and as I turned on my shortwave it was set to 3.933 and two guys were having a qso talking about him.

I went downstairs to my shack to let them know.

Crazy.

I was working a ham in Hawaii on SSB voice when I heard a scanner alert in the background warn of an incoming nuclear missile.  The ham signed off rather abruptly.  It was a good 5 minutes before any of the internet news stories posted on it.

My ham buddy & his  yl moved away some years before this event.

Shally, k6vhp, was my mentor and owned "Radio Ranch" which had to be seen to be comprehended!  Shally gave me an old HW-12 80m monobander & power supply.  The rig stayed in my shed for several months.  Finally one day, I decided I'd bring the HW-12 in and power it up for a few hours.  I connected a testing dipole to it.  No matchbox or anything.  I had several hours of paperwork to complete.

I don't know what frequency it was listening on, but about an hour after I powered it up I heard "is this frequency in use?"  The voice was so distinctive, I knew it was my old friend, Nathan n6ccr!  I quickly turned around, grabbed the mic and said "yes it is!  How are you doing Nathan?"   Nathan was as stymied as I was.  It had been years since we said our goodbyes and will wishes and here he was, on a random spot on the dial of an antique HW-12 :)

We had a wonderful catch-up qso and I hadn't even tuned the radio!

That was a fun day.

Somewhat unrelated but, I found a phone in some vacant lot junk, it didn't have a keypad, it was the type that would
mount on wall, it had one red button, I hooked up to a phone line and being young and naive pressed the button, touch tone dialing and then
a live person said Elevator repair service.

About 20-25 years ago, I was tuning around the old Novice 40 Meter CW band, looking for a contact. The band was dead and I couldn't seem to hear any signals. Then, I started hearing a signal sending easily readable code. So I listened for a bit. It turned out that station was sending "hello is anyone out there can anyone hear me" and then signed his call. I listened twice to be sure of what I was hearing. So I gave him a call. It turned out that, it was his first time on the air and he didn't know how to send a CQ. We talked for a few minutes and he signed off, because he was exhausted.

Back in the early 90's I worked a guy Martin in California, not once, but twice on the FM portion of 10m. The cycle was very good then. When I ran his call, it was Martin Brandeaux or he said his name was that. I'm not totally sure. It was actually Marlin Brando who use a pseudonym on the air.

Yesterday there was a long story posted on spotlights, it was a story about Marlon Brando and another ham who made some antenna instalations in Tahiti for Marlon, Its pretty hard to find the spotlights as when you are finished reading the next time you return to the home page its gone.
But you could search visually, the image for the story was Marlon is a white shirt and another ham behind him.
