Ftdx10 vs. FTdx-3000
« on: January 26, 2023, 09:16:25 AM »

For you people familiar with the FTdx-3000 and have bought a FTdx10 .  How would rate the difference overall ?
Better , the same , OK ?    Very curious . Looking at new rigs and I think the 101D is a bit to much for what I do and am curious about the FTdx10 . I'd be coming from a FTdx-3000 that sadly has a couple of issues right now .

Thanks and 73

I own an FTdx-10 that I use everyday and I use an FTdx-3000 several days a year at a local contester's station. I greatly prefer the FTdx-10.

Ergonomics: The FTdx-10 controls I use are clustered right around the tuning dial for instant access. Between the buttons and touch screen I don't need to go into the menu. The MPVD dial (outer dial around the tuning dial) is wonderful. I have it set for CLAR and by punching the C.S. button it is assigned to the display LEVEL function. I leave the FUNC knob set to CW SPEED.

Functions I use and prefer the performance of on the FTdx-10 include the DNR, NB, APF and filters.

The FTdx-10 display is on another level.

The FTDX 3000 is quieter, has more quality receive and transmit audio. Preference between the 3000 and the 10 and even the 991a, the 3000 wins hands down. Should not be a question about which is better.

I owned a TFDX3000 six month after they started shipping that rig so we are talking an early version of that rig, owned it till 2017 so it had to be better than 5 years. The RX was very good but I will say during contest time on 20m and lower I had to use attenuation many times so the front end would seem stiffer but only a little but here again that was when the bands were packed. For most daily operation it was very good. After the 3000 O bought first the 7300 and between those two rigs there was not much difference but once I got the 7610 Icom that was a step in the right direction.

After having a back up like the 7300 for the 7610 I decided on switching to an FTDX10 and that was even in the first month it was being shipped, yes it was smaller than the 7610 but larger than the 7300, Had a nice display but no averaging but compared to the FTDX3000 you could use the Tens display allot better with more resolution. The FTDX10 actually compared more to the 7610 and come contest time was found to be better especially on the low bands, I just used the IPO but never touched the attenuator buttons. The selectivity is very good but in combo with a more stout front end makes all the differences in the world, this is were the rubber meets the road and to me the ten is more like the FTDX101D and I am not saying that I own both, I am not going by some RX list but real world operating plus I live on the east coast of the USA.  Just ask anyone who lives in Europe as far as front end selectivity in the mists of big commercial swl broadcasters.

The 991A might be a multi band station in a box but place that rig behind even a tribander at 40' and a multi band dipole come the CQWWSSB or CW contest and unless you live our in the middle of nowhere that 991A will fold. Its designed to be a VHF and HF radio but nowhere near comparable to the FTDX10 plus the new FT710 I hear is right behind the FTDX10, the newer Yaesu HF line is greatly improved.

I would like to know the issues you have with the FTDX3000, overall its a reliable rig but IMO the Ten is in a different league. If I wanted a radio to pack into my suitcase and go to some island DX spot plus wanted a rig to handle big pileups my money would be on the Ten and to be honest if I didn't need the second RX I could be very stratified with just the FTDX10, you own mileage may vary.

FTDX-3000 has the better filters.
The FTDX-10 is better eye candy... and is newer!  Nothing wrong with the radio.
However, I am not in the market at this time.

I appreciate and value all your opinions , thank you .  The radio I own now , the FTdx-3000 , I consider it probably the best receiver I've had in a ham rig , I mean its so wonderful to listen to , quiet , pulls out all the signals right from the very bottom .  So I'm a bit nervous to make the jump to the 10 and the 101d is a big jump in price .  This will take some serious thinking .

This the wrong way to make a decision.  Read the reviews on eham, look at the ratings.

You seem to feel that you want a Yaesu.  So buy it and find out.  I might suggest checking on the repair vendors on Eham and calling a few and seeing how much they think the 3000 will cost to repair.  From what I hear the FT 3000 is a really good rig.  As some else said lots of "eye candy".  AND PLEASE, do not base your purchase on Bob Sherwoods list.  Even, Bob, will tell anyone that the top ten or so radios and maybe the top Fifteen, are all very good rigs, each has its good and bad points.  For what it's worth.  # reviewed - ratings for eham  FTDX-10  92/4.4,  Icom 7300 408/4.7,  FT 3000 184/4.7,  Kenwood 590SG 110/4.8

If you need eye candu, you can buy a SDRPlay and very easily add it to the Kenwood 590SG and get both the WaterFall display and an actual second receiver.

What am I running now ( and I have owned within the last 3 years the FTDX 10, 7300, 590SG, FTdx 5000, Icom 7600, Flex 6500, Flex 6600, and a Kenwood 890S ),  I at this time have the 590SG, the 890S, and the Flex 6600 with the Maestro remote.  Since price is probably important to you I will say if I had to keep one radio I would keep my 590SG, yes no eye candy, but I can add the SDRPlay ( which I do have ).  The 590SG is a solid and I mean "solid" rig with all that you need to do all the latest modes etc, easy to interface, quiet fan, I could go on.  Or in your case repair the FT 3000 and buy some other ham toys you may have been thinking about.  Good Luck.

I'm not basing any decisions on solely what I am reading here , these are all just tools to use when doing a little research . I do like the 590SG , it was in line when I picked up my 3000 , the 3K was just a better radio imo .  I am getting the 3000 repaired no matter what but am going to add another radio to the bench here , I just want the RX to be as pleasant to listen to as the 3000 .

Thanks for all your help
