A fuse on the negative lead is protection from a hard fault, but there can be conditions where a ground is just "iffy" and currents less than where a fuse would open flows through the radio chassis.  So the  radio sits there and "cooks", or experiences fluctuations of supply voltage which generally detracts from radio operation and reliability.  Grounding near the battery ground point reduces effects of ground faults.

I thank everyone for their comments. I was able to snake the positive wire through the opening in the left front quarter panel as advised and then found a rubber boot going to the door for the power windows and run the wire through there to get it into the passenger compartment. I had taken 2 trim panels loose, one along the floor and the other going up the side and run the positive wire through there back to the radio under the seat. Also, behind the panel going up the side, I found a common ground connection point and connected the negative wire there. I ended up using a mag mount antenna and running the coax through the door gasket. Everything seems to be working well. Thanks again.
