Open Mic or Voice Prompts
« on: February 03, 2023, 05:35:06 AM »

What software is being used in FT8 mode that gives voice prompts over the air.  Isn't there a way to turn that off?  Seems like I hear this on all the bands, so it must be a popular software package.  Doesn't sound like an open mic.

What are the 'voice prompts' saying?

Can't make out what's being said because the announcements are overridden by the FT-8 tones.  Definitely different prompts.  Some longer than others.  They start at the beginning of the tone sequence.

I just read that a program called Grid Tracker does that because the soundcard isn't set correctly.

Gridtracker will send voice prompts for new grid, new DXCC etc if enabled. Unfortunately, a lot of hams don't realize that if you are using the same sound card for shack listening and digital modes, these voice prompts will get transmitted over the air along with the digital tones. I hear this all the time on the bands and it does get quite annoying. I use an outboard USB 5.1 sound card for the shack monitoring and PC's internal sound card for all digital work. I understand this is not possible for all, but I think operators should check to see if the voice prompts are enabled. They may not want them or even know they are being transmitted.
