23cm EME from KHØ in the Near Future
« on: February 04, 2023, 03:49:38 AM »

I guess EME is somewhat relative to the DXing section of eHam. After all, a signal which travels 480,000 miles round trip is pretty good DX. Mods please move this thread if I have committed an egregious error for posting here.

I'm presently in the process of constructing a 400 Watt 23cm EME station here on Saipan using a dish, circular polarization feed & many other goodies. Looking forward to working other 1296 MHz EME enthusiasts in the near future. Unfortunately the vast, vast majority of EME QSOs these days are via WSJT and not CW.  :(

Working on my former 432 MHz array 20+ years ago WITHOUT a climbing belt probably wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done.........For the infinitesimal number of you who operate 23cm EME, "see you on the moon" in the near future!!!

Hi Tom

Good luck on 23cms, Sorry for the off topic reply but is there much activity in KH0

I need it on Digi ( I know you don't do digi) I worked that young JA contester back 10-12 years ago on RTTY but I must have been NIL as I never got a confirmation and I have never heard KH0 on Digi since,

I am trying to get to 300 on Digi before the end of the cycle and this is one of the low hanging fruits as they say,

Everything on VHF is dominated by some kind of WSJT-X mode these days.  MSK144 for meteors, FT8 for terrestrial, JT65 or maybe Q65 for EME.

You can still do non-FT8, but moonbounce is heavily in the WSJT-X line and has been for some time.

I'm told there's some holdouts on 432 MHz doing CW only for EME, but it's a small crew even by EME standards.  I live in a part of Arizona where the power limits apply, so I haven't even daydreamed about 432; don't know from experience, obviously.

Hi Tom,

I think Al K2UYH or Al W5LUA could tell you  the number of CW stations on 1296 EME that you could potentially work with your station.

When I was at WA7CJO I was sure I heard SSB echos off the moon when they tried that!  400W to a 26ft dish on 10GHz!

Good luck with your project.

I was on 2m eme for a little while - my friend Andy WA2DKJ (sk) and I put together a station with 4 x 9el yagis and an 8877 amp back in 2012. Since my yard is pretty bad for decent shots of the moon, we used his yard and had a setup there for roughly a year. I have it all here now but not setup. I also have put together a setup for 23cm eme. I had some room to get a dish up but no more. With my 2m setup, like you, I wanted to operate cw but I found most were (and still are) on jt65. I did manage to make a handful of CW QSO's which I was happy about (and of course dozens and dozens of jt-65 contacts)

The eventual plan in the next several years is to get a few acres somewhere and setup everything there (and eventually move there permanently).

Good luck with the 23cm setup!! Do post pics!!

 Hello Trevor,

I can help you out with KH0.

Here is my log of worked EI/GI stations. If you want to determine what UTC time most of the EI stations went into my log that might help us when we giver 'er a try. Unfortunately extreme western Europe (UK, Iceland, Wales, Ireland, Faroe Islands, etc) is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY tough from here. Central & eastern Europe are relatively easy...............Too bad you aren't in Italy. 4,261 of them are in my log, Mamma mia.

Better yet, if you are friends with either EI4KF or EI6IL perhaps they will let you use their station for a few minutes.

Hi Tom

Thanks for the reply and the great info, I have a pretty decent station for EI (Yagi 20-10 and a decent 1/4 wave on 80/40&30 and QRO) so should be workable if there is conditions, early my morning would be the best bet,  I don't see your email on QRZ if you could just drop me a mail to ei2glb"at"hotmail.com we can try to work out something for later in the week if that suits,

Thanks
Trevor

OK Trevor.........Too bad you don't work CW. Propagation into western  Europe is really good right now. Have been working lot's of stations in Spain & my signal seems decent into Europe according to IU5HWS.  It's only been 35 minutes since you posted, if you are around RIGHT NOW we can try FT8.

Sorry Tom I'm in work on shift for the next 3 days, I do CW (poorly) but I need KH0 for Digi DXCC, we could try for CW on a band or 2 as well if you have time when we try, I don't have KH0 on that many bands

Thanks

23cm EME has a lot of CW compared to 2m/70cm. Take a look at the results of the ARRL EME contest for example.

I have decided to abandon the idea of the 400 amplifier & go with 600 watts. No big deal for HF but a decent sized jump in world of 1296 MHz. Everything is being shipped from mainland USA. The fun part starts after everything arrives here.............QRX.

Will post photos of the completed station for anyone interested in another few months. Worst case scenario is I will have an expensive hotdog cooker.
