Yaesu FT-710 and WSJT-X
« on: February 05, 2023, 09:42:50 AM »

I've searched all over for the answer for this very common problem but I have yet to find an answer that works for me.

I'm wondering if anyone has the secret sauce recipe to make a new Yeasu FT-710 AESS play nicely with WSJT-X.

My shack setup as follows:

Yaesu FT-710 AESS
MAIN: V01-08
DISPLAY: V01-06
DSP: V01-00
SDR: V01-03
DST: USA

POWER SUPPLY - MFJ-4230MV
TUNER - MFJ-939 W/Yaesu Interface Cable
WATT METER - MFJ-882
ANTENNA - Chamealeon CHA EMCOMM II V2

MS WINDOWS 11 Pro
OS Name   Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
Version   10.0.22621 Build 22621
Processor   AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor, 3801 Mhz, 12 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)
BaseBoard Manufacturer   ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
BaseBoard Product   TUF GAMING X570-PLUS
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)   64.0 GB

WSJT-X V2.6.1 6b6d74

Pics of my settings attached but I've tried endless combinations.

I have found that I CAT Control works perfectly.  Receive and decode works perfectly.  But like so many others I cannot seem to get transmit audio from the computer to the radio reliavbly.  In fact I did have it working for a couple hours last night.  It juyst seems to work and I wasn't able to identify what I did to get it working.  Then for no appaprent reason it just stopped working as mysteriously as it started working.  I haven't been able to make it work since.

I have contacted Ham Radio Outlet and Yeasu for advice, but it has been my experience that community user groups such as this one often have answers that are far better than the vendors.  I'm hoping someone has advice they are willing to share.  At the very least I intend to document this problem as completely as possible and hopefully that will help lead to a reliable resolution.

I appreciate any ideas you may have.

Thank you!

Matt

Sorry.  Attempts to attach the screen shots of settings have failed.  I'm sure I'm not doing that correctly.

Look in the forum topic "Site Talk", at the very top there is a "sticky" thread explaining how to use a third-party image hosting service to display images here in the forums.

Good luck resolving your issue.

It doesn't seem to work with the IMG tags.  (I'm a reasonably intelligent guy.  Really I am.)

Did you check and or, adjust the settings on page 57 0f the manual  ??  I don't now a 710, but know from all the years of using many rigs on digital modes that the audio in and out levels may need tweaking.

I've tried a lot of different combinations of the settings listed there that my manual falls open to the pages 56-57 by itself now.  Given the number of setting and the number of choices for each setting getting it right by trial and error will take forever, kind of like hitting the Powerball numbers.  I have tried the obvious things like mod source and mod gain to no avail.

There are several YouTube videos on settings. Perhaps they are helpful.

I've been looking around YouTube as well.  I have not yet found the magic recipe that works for me.  There is one more detail I should have included above.  When I got the radio on Saturday it would not transmit as all on any band or any mode.  When the mic was keyed the BUSY/TX light would flash not a steady glow as indicated in the manual.  I spoke to the manager of the Ham Radio Outlet store and he recommended that I upgrade the firmware.  Once that was done and I reset the microprocessor it would then transmit even on digital modes for a couple hours as described above.  Then it stopped working.  I'm beginning to wonder if this is a defective transceiver.  Maybe there is still something wrong from that initial problem that I experienced before the firmware was updated.

Just for grins, in the 'Radio' menu, 'Mode' section, click 'None' vs 'Data/Pkt'.

Also, presume you are not using an external interface, i.e. Signalink or some other device.  Did you download the Yaesu comm driver?

Yaesu driver downloaded from their website and installed.  I did that before I ever connected the radio via USB.  I'm not using a SignaLink but I did order the cable and jumper chip so that I can.  That may fix the problem, or at least a good work around.

PROBLEM SOLVED.  Yeasu technical support finally sentme the answer.  I had my Windows 11 audio levels set too high, (at 100%).  Once I dropped those to 50% it works like it should!  Since I can't seem to figure out how to attach the documents here please let me know and I can forward the emails to you.  Thank you all for the responses and the ideas!
