USB combiner ?
« on: February 06, 2023, 04:39:53 PM »

I run HDSDR on one laptop and WSJT-X on another in the shack.
I am using an Icom IC-7610 and there is only one USB port in the back for data.
I have to unplug the USB cable from one laptop and plug in the other when I am changing modes.
Kind of a PITA   hihi

Will they both work OK if I use a USB hub where I can plug in multiple USB cables. ?
If not how about a USB switch ?

An obvious solution is to run both apps from one laptop but I prefer to use these particular laptops for each app.

you answered your own question.... A USB hub is what you want. It will actually assign your new ports with an ID. I have run as many as 8 extra USB ports at one time (using multiple thumb drives all at once) with no problems.
Hope that helps...

A hub won't work.

Yes, a USB SWITCH.

Doesn’t the 7610 have a separate CI-V connector on the back? You might be able to have one laptop connected via usb, and the second via a ci-v adapter.

Thanks for the help guys.   To answer the question from K6JH,  the 7610 has two connectors on the back but only one is assigned to data.
Sounds like a USB switch is the thing to do.

Probably the easiest to use a usb switch.

What I was thinking was to have one laptop connected via USB, and the second to the CI-V Remote 3.5mm jack via a CT-17 converter (or make your own). Then there is a menu selection which links or unlinks the usb to the remote jack. I *think* if they’re linked commands and responses from usb are echoed out the remote jack , and vice versa. But I’ve never tried my 7300 like that, so YMMV. And it does require setting the baud rate down to 19.2 or slower.

Or maybe the remote jack also still works when usb is unlinked. I don’t know enough about that either.

Anyone?
