Can I shorten the power cable that comes with the IC-7300
« on: February 07, 2023, 05:49:27 PM »

I am wondering if there is a reason to leave the power cable so long on my 7300?

I run power poles on everything and each output has its own fuse. As long as its fused is it ok to cut the long power cord and make it something easier to deal with?

Thanks

I wouldn't. No matter how well you plan, there will always be a moment when you need to move the radio and will by hampered by the shortened cord.

No problem; it may actually help with less voltage drop, although some feel that using the Power Pole distribution boxes and associated fuses actually increase voltage losses.
If you are concerned about re-sale, then get an aftermarket cable to cut and leave the original in the box.

Connectors are available, so you could make your own power cord and keep the original in case of resale.

I agree. Resale value goes down with a short cable. Also save the original boxes. Radio sell quicker with the original box.

That is what I did with mine. Just bought the components, (considerably cheaper than a new ICOM cord) and made my own custom length (much shorter) cords.

I agree with Mike K6AER. Keep the power cord the original length. Its best for resale plus down the road who knows when you may need a longer power cord.

You can shorten it visually by rewinding the cable like it was in the box and extending the extruding part by the amount convenient. Just add the length you need and replace the plastic crimp fastener. No need for cutting and soldering. Or get a PS126. Then you will possibly ask 'can I lengthen the power cable..' Your question is a good one, don't be deflected.

I usually shorten mine - you could easily be wasting half a volt along it. Remove the fuses too - necessary in a mobile installation, but not on the shack desk.

British and some other unsuspecting come with a rather large 'filter' in the 12v DC lead, supposedly required under 'international law' which add substantially to the mass of the power cable.

That's always the first thing to go - I have a draw full of them!

You can buy an aftermarket one on Amazon for $12.88.

(https://www.amazon.com/IC-7100-IC-7200-IC-7300-IC-7000-IC-7610/dp/B07PLSXJ5F/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BNH5KI8TV0O6&keywords=icom+7300+power+cable&qid=1675955992&sprefix=icom+7300%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-3)

Just buy one and shorten it, and get rid of the powerpoles if you're never going to move it.
