I have read on eham comments that call an end fed an entry level antenna or worse.
Anybody that says that isn't worth the paper his license is printed on. Pay no attention to such colon discharge.
The "basis" of all antennas are either dipoles/doublets (Hertz) or end-fed (Marconi). Whether the antenna is a ground mounted vertical, semi-random-length wire, EFHW, ground plane, or any other antenna worked against ground (other than the EFHW), it is an end fed antenna.
No antenna is "entry level," nor is it garbage if built correctly. We can't all afford multiband quads or yagis, sitting atop a 100 foot tower. We make do with what we have available. I run 50-100 watts (depending on the mode) into a 40 foot end-fed wire. I get more than my share of DX when I go looking for it. I won't override the big guns with big linears and towers with quads on top, but I really don't care. Ham radio is my hobby, not my profession. Just have fun and learn. That's what ham radio is all about.
