6BTV tuning
« on: February 09, 2023, 01:21:10 PM »

Would the tuning of a 6BTV be a problem if the antenna was mounted temporarily on a pipe driven into a ground next to a driveway? At least a couple of radials would be attached during the tuning process.

Once the antenna was tuned then move it to the permanent mounting pipe and radial location. This location is in an area of uneven ground. The persons doing the tuning aren't able to traverse the uneven ground very well.

You will probably get more learned advice than mine, but my experience with ground mounted verticals has been that performance characteristics can change from one location to another and with the addition or subtraction of radials.  Nevertheless, if the final mounting site is that difficult to work in/on, I would give your proposal a try.  You might get lucky.  It's worth a shot.

KE0OG, the ARRL's and QST's new technical has a motto when it comes to antennas: "Everything affects everything."  Over the years I've assembled and tuned various antennas on the ground and then hoisted them in the air and values have changed due to different parameters, especially height above ground. The ARRL's antenna handbook goes into great detail about this stuff and is worth buying.
