Have a great time operating the DX-160, one sixty!
« on: February 09, 2023, 03:11:21 PM »

One night several of us had a conversation about other rigs and the DX-60 was mentioned in part because several of us have the screen grid modulation and audio improvements added.  The idea of putting them on 160 meters was kicked around and zoom we were off to try them on the top band.  I was one of the first to add caps and tank inductance needed to resonate and put up a signal on our net meeting frequency of 1.985 Mc not Mhz as these are boat anchors after all.

Their operation at night is a hoot and running 10 watts or so barefoot gives out some remarkable signals even at a hundred miles.  My solar powered ameritron amplifier at 100 watts really does the job though it's not usually needed.

We have come to calling the rigs dx-160s - tongue in cheek having a laugh.  One reason is at at our ages the boat anchors are a beast to lift so we thought the dx would be a welcome break from the heavier "iron".

If you have a dx-60 in the back collecting dust, here is a chance to give it a try and get operating on the gentlemans band!

I THINK IT WAS A 1980 JULY ISSUE OF 73 MAGAZINE THAT HAD THE MODS TO PUT THE DX60 ON 160M.
