Huge Piece Of Sun Breaks Off
« on: February 10, 2023, 12:25:50 PM »

Dr. Tamitha Skov quoted here with some interesting imagery.

"A huge part of the Sun broke off of its surface and created a tornado-like swirl around its North Pole. Though scientists are trying to analyse how this occurred, the video of the development has stunned the space community. The remarkable phenomenon was caught by NASA's James Webb telescope and shared on Twitter by Dr Tamitha Skov, a space weather forecaster, last week. The Sun keeps emitting solar flares (called prominence) that sometimes affect communications on Earth, hence scientists are more concerned about the latest development.

"Talk about Polar Vortex! Material from a northern prominence just broke away from the main filament & is now circulating in a massive polar vortex around the north pole of our Star. Implications for understanding the Sun's atmospheric dynamics above 55 degrees here cannot be overstated!" Dr Skov said in a tweet last week."

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Well it will either kill the bands for a while, enhance them to 1958-level activity, or we won't be around to worry about HF either way :D

My response to predictions of anything is "It either will, or it won't."
Interesting for sure, but carry on regardless.

How about Moscow or Beijing?  DC is small.  It would spill over into VA.

DPRK would be better, both for political reasons and putting P5 on the Deleted Countries list :D :D
Or Scarborough Reef.

(i.e. X1.1 flare) which peaked at 1548 UTC or 10:48am EST.

Let me guess.  You need both of them, right?

I very much doubt that it was "caught by the James Webb Space Telescope" - that is a heavily shielded, cryogenically cooled device for observing deep space objects - pointing it at the sun would do serious damage...

I need P5, I got Scarborough on CW and Phone but regardless it shouldn't be an entity. P5 I just wish would just collapse and cease to exist as an actual nation, radio notwithstanding.

Now if that filament that shot out of the sun would land on a DQRMer's tower I wouldn't particularly mind that either.

I agree about P5 ceasing to exist for non-radio reasons.  I saw the fat boss with his young daughter on the tube the other day at an event.  He's grooming his successor very young.  Given his heft I'd put his life expectancy at no higher than 60 but he's still young so baring a coup we'll be stuck with him for awhile.

Yeah right. The headline is that a "Huge Piece Of Sun Breaks Off". Not "A Tiny Speck Of Sun Breaks Off". If that landed here, none of us will be left to complain.
