5B-WAZ achieved!
« on: February 10, 2023, 07:00:40 PM »

A journey that started 22 years ago came to a successful conclusion earlier this afternoon when I logged HS0ZOY on 80 meters, completing my 200th zone for the 5B-WAZ award. I was stuck at 196 for the longest time, then finally got zones 19 and 23 a couple of years ago, and had been holding at 198 until logging the last two this week, with LoTW confirmations received. A lot of heartaches and near-misses over the years, time when I was just not able to get up at the morning greyline or working and unable to play radio, but today the stars finally aligned.

I think I may have one Cohiba left in the humidor, and there's a bottle of something very rare and very old in my Scotch cabinet waiting for me to delve into it. Tomorrow.

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Congratulations.  5 band WAZ is one heck of a lot harder than 5 band DXCC.

If you worked it with your station, CONGRATULATIONS, that's a great achievement. If you did it using a method you mentioned in another thread today, then...

That is an incredible accomplishment!!! I have been stuck at 190 for 2 years and I can not imagine getting them all. You should be very proud; it takes LOTS of patience and some good eats!!

Congrats Pete. I find 5B-WAZ more interesting than DXCC.

Congratulations.  5 band WAZ is one heck of a lot harder than 5 band DXCC.
For me it was harder than 10 Band DXCC—I hit that milestone a year ago. And while I value it tremendously, the 5B-WAZ is the one I treasure. Even over Honor Roll Mixed, CW, and Phone. Only HR#1 will top it for me.

That is an incredible accomplishment!!! I have been stuck at 190 for 2 years and I can not imagine getting them all.
It's a slog, that's for sure. But quite honestly, anything over 190 is a Big Deal and takes a lot of dedication. I was at 196 for almost 15 years!!

Fantastic, Peter! 5BWAZ is a huge achievement!
I've been sitting on 199 for a year now. One Zone (34) off. Interestingly, I am one off DXCC Honour Roll too!

Congratulations, Peter.  My son and I met you at Dayton Hamvention quite a few years ago.  As I recall, we talked about DX pursuits, including 5B-WAZ, at that time.

As someone who has been stuck at 196 for years, I appreciate the difficulty of this achievement. I've compared it to walking on water.  When someone in our local DX club gets their 200 zones, I make it a point to take them out to lunch. The last guy was KQ0B (now SK), who was featured in a CQ magazine article-- his last zone was z-2 on ten meters.

I also recall being on FT-8 one late afternoon on 80 meters and watched as WO7R worked z-21 for his 200th.

So, Pete, break out that cigar and scotch and bask in your accomplishment!

Congratulations.

I am sitting at 196 myself.  All 4 zones needed on 80M 26, 27, 28 and 18.  Have been there for 5 years.  I could get 18 easily enough but what's the motivation given the SE Asia hurdle.

From VT, the 3 zones needed are a serious stretch on 80M.  With the introduction of FT8 in the last 5 years, I haven't even heard Zones 23 or 24 on CW let alone the ones I still need.

Good on you for finding them.
