Fun on 20M with KC4USV
« on: February 11, 2023, 09:39:53 PM »

Saw a spot come up for 3Y0 on 14190 USB. Figured it was another pirate but (WFWL) went to check it out.

Found no 3Y0 but KC4USV instead calling CQ with no takers. Loud. Clear. No Flutter. Then a very loud SM3 - Swedish station calling him. I listen to a long QSO between them - hearing them both quite well. During their QSO I posted a spot and the fun began.

First station that worked him after that was surprisingly close to me (300 miles) and I had decent copy on him too.

After their QSO the pileup blew up - stations from all around the world calling - he works a few and then pulls a new "General" class making his first ever HF QSO!

Imagine you first HF QSO ever is with Antarctica? Made me smile. Good job.

Still standing by and listening to the pileup.

I heard your QSO - both sides - you guys made it sound like two locals. Awesome conditions.

Mosley S33 and the limit. Three elements 40/20/17. Have a TA32 on same mast. Two elements 20-15-10. I have a Hy Gain 1015 that is three elements 15/10 I will replace the TA32 with this spring.

He went QRT at 06:04 UTC and in his QRT comments mentioned the "incredible skip" today. I heard him work stations in the US and Canada but also in Russia, Sweden, Siberia, Finland and more.

The OH2 said that he had "been chasing McMurdo for 30 years" - the RW9 (in Siberia) and him exchanged weather observations and determined it was officially colder in Siberia than at McMurdo - and every time it sounded like Jason has signed off he would pull another out of the pileup and they'd have a QSO.

A fun night in the DX world.

My friend Andy WA2DKJ (sadly sk) would generate quite a pileup each year when he activated KC4AAA. 20 meters seemed to be the best band to make it down there reliably in our evenings. That would be awesome to have Antarctica as your first HF QSO! That would surely get me hooked!

I remember working KC4AAA from the Cal State University Northridge ham club station way back in 1978! Funny how those memories stick around!

All of my QSL's from the old days (prior to 2014 ) were lost except for a small collection of Oscar AO-13 cards - but when I started over again in 2014 KC4AAA was my first QSO with Antarctica ... still have the paper QSL. Fond memory,
